Baseball Drops Two in Florida Finale

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Penn State Altoona baseball team wrapped up its week in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational on Saturday, when the Lions were swept in a doubleheader with Roger Williams University at Lake Myrtle Park.

Penn State Altoona (4-7) let a lead slip away late in game one, losing 7-5. In game two, Roger Williams (3-0) outlasted the Lions to win 7-5.

Game One: Roger Williams 7, Penn State Altoona 5

Penn State Altoona took a 5-4 lead into the final inning, but Roger Williams scored three runs in the top of the seventh and defeated the Lions by two.

Corey Chamberlain (Claysburg, PA/Claysburg-Kimmel) was 2-for-2 at the plate for Penn State Altoona with a double, two runs batted in, two walks, and a run scored. Jonathan Rauch (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) was 1-for-3 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored, and Jake Hillard (State College, PA/State College) was 1-for-3 with a run scored and a walk.

Grayson McClain (Mount Union, PA/Mount Union) had a double and a run scored, while Brian Chelli (West Hartford, CT/Hall) and Alex Hlivia (Pennsylvania Furnace, PA/State College) also had one hit apiece. Dominic McCaffrey (Spotswood, NJ/St. John Vianney) recorded an RBI.

Eric Seick (Mount Laurel, NJ/Camden Catholic) started at pitcher and finished with a no decision. The right-hander went 5 2/3 innings and limited Roger Williams to three earned runs while striking out three batters. Brycen Flinton (Denver, PA/Cocalico) tossed 1 1/3 innings in relief, allowing one earned run and taking the loss.

Roger Williams scored a run in the top of the first when London Camelo reached on a single to shortstop and came around to later score on a passed ball.

Penn State Altoona answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. Hillard drew a leadoff walk, stole second base, and scored on Rauch's double to right center. Chamberlain followed with a double into the right-center gap to plate Rauch, putting the Lions ahead 2-1.

The Hawks evened the score at 2-2 in the top of the second on Ty Cali's two-out RBI triple, but the Lions responded quickly again, reclaiming the lead in the bottom of the inning on Chamberlain's bases-loaded walk.

Roger Williams tied the score 3-3 in the top of the fourth on Aidan Hawley's RBI single up the middle with two outs.

But Penn State Altoona took its lead back in the bottom of the fifth. Chamberlain started the frame with a single to center, Jimmy Mento (Corapeake, NC/Gates County) drew a walk, and Hlivia had a base hit to center to load the bases. McCaffrey walked to score Chamberlain, and a wild pitch allowed Mento to come home, giving the Lions a 5-3 advantage.

Roger Williams got another two-out, run-scoring hit from Cali in the sixth, as his RBI double down the right-field line cut Penn State Altoona's lead to 5-4.

The Hawks used a three-run top of the seventh to jump in front. With the bases loaded and one out, Dennis Folan's sacrifice fly to right tied the game at 5-5. A throwing error on the next play allowed two more Roger Williams runs to score, and the Hawks went ahead, 7-5.

The Lions went down in order in the bottom half of the inning, and Roger Williams clinched the win in game one.

Game Two: Roger Williams 7, Penn State Altoona 5

The Lions worked their way out to a 4-2 lead through two-and-a-half innings, but Roger Williams scored two in the third and three in the fourth to secure a three-run advantage. Penn State Altoona threatened to tie the game in the seventh, but the Hawks stifled the Lions' comeback attempt to clinch the sweep.

Hillard finished 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Mento was 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored. Chelli and McClain recorded one RBI apiece.

Tristin Lockett (Lewistown, PA/Mifflin County) started on the mound for the Lions and sustained the loss, going 3 2/3 innings, surrendering five earned runs, and punching out four batters. Michael Labisi (Mountainside, NJ/Governor Livingston) pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings out of the bullpen with two strikeouts.

Roger Williams grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, when Camelo's RBI single through the right side and Jack Morin's RBI double to right center gave the Hawks the game's first runs.

Penn State Altoona countered with three runs in the top of the second, getting all three across with two outs. Mento's double down the left-field line plated the Lions' first run, and back-to-back RBI base hits by McClain and Hillard later in the frame pushed Penn State Altoona in front, 3-2.

The Lions added a run to their total in the top of the third. Rauch led off with a single, moved up to third after a pair of wild pitches, and scored on Chelli's groundout to second, giving Penn State Altoona a 4-2 advantage.

Roger Williams knotted the score at 4-4 in the bottom half of the third. Morin's RBI double to left cut the Lions' lead to one, and Owen Hibbard's run-scoring base hit to center evened the score at four runs apiece.

The Hawks scored three in the fourth to reclaim the lead. After Cali's one-out triple to right, Aidan Hawley put down a sacrifice bunt to bring Cali home, giving Roger Williams a one-run advantage. Christopher Flynn followed with a solo home run to right, and Morin's RBI single up the middle gave Roger Williams a 7-4 advantage.

Penn State Altoona made a push in the seventh inning. With one out, Chamberlain and Chelli each walked, and Hlivia singled to right to load the bases. After a strikeout made it two outs, a wild pitch allowed Chamberlain to score from third base, while Chelli and Hlivia each moved up a base. But Roger Williams got out of the jam with a groundout, ending the game and the Lions' comeback hopes.

Penn State Altoona baseball will now return to Pennsylvania, and the Lions' next game will be their home opener on Tuesday, March 19. The team will host non-conference opponent Hobart College that day in a single, nine-inning game, with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m.
