Lions Net 2-1 Win on Late Goal

ALTOONA, Pa. – Grady Ballard (State College, PA/State College) scored in the 87th minute in a tie game for the Penn State Altoona men's soccer team on Tuesday night, helping to propel the Lions past non-conference opponent Saint Vincent College 2-1 at Spring Run Stadium.

Ballard's game-winning goal was his third of the season, and he also assisted on the evening's first score. Bailey Musselman (Altoona, PA/Altoona) tallied his second goal of the year for the Lions (3-1).

Tommy Packevicz (Trumbull, CT/Christian Heritage) recorded nine saves in goal for Penn State Altoona to pick up his third win of the season.

Penn State Altoona and St. Vincent (0-4) battled to a scoreless deadlock by halftime, with the visiting Bearcats holding a 7-5 edge in shot attempts during the game's opening period.

The Lions broke the tie in the early stages of the second half, capitalizing on a corner kick opportunity. Ballard sent a corner kick into the box, where it found Musselman, who headed the ball into the left side of the goal to put Penn State Altoona ahead, 1-0.

However, St. Vincent tied the score less than two minutes later, when David Rahman's hard angle shot in the box beat the keeper to his right from 12 yards at the 60:59 mark.

But, in the waning minutes of regulation, Penn State Altoona came up with the go-ahead goal. A turnover by St. Vincent was collected by Mina Boulos (Al Ain, UAE/International School of Choueifat) and tapped up the left sideline for Ballard, who raced past the defense and snuck a shot just inside the right goal post from inside the box at 86:29 to put the Lions back on top, 2-1.

Ballard tied for the game-high in shot attempts with four. Ciaran Corr (Newtown Square, PA/Marple Newtown), Abdul Sattar (Mount Olive, NJ/Mount Olive), and Ballard each finished with two shots on goal.

Men's soccer returns to action this Thursday, September 16, when the Lions travel to play non-conference opponent Thiel College at 7:30 p.m.
