Susquehanna Quiets Lions’ Bats in Wednesday Doubleheader

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona softball team was held to just two runs in Wednesday afternoon's doubleheader with non-conference opponent Susquehanna University at Sassafras Field, leading to a loss by the Lions in each game.

Susquehanna (6-9) posted a 6-1 victory in game one, then held on for a tight 2-1 win over the Lions (7-8) in the nightcap.

Game One: Susquehanna 6, Penn State Altoona 1

The Lions trailed by just one run, 2-1, through two-and-a-half innings, but Susquehanna tacked four more runs on to its total in the bottom of the third while keeping Penn State Altoona off the scoreboard the rest of the way.

Cameryn Feathers (Martinsburg, PA/Central) had two of Penn State Altoona's five hits, going 2-for-4 with a triple and a run batted in. Brooke Colledge (Everett, PA/Everett), Jordan Krawcion (Johnstown, PA/Central Cambria), and Hannah Lauck (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) also had one hit apiece for the Lions.

Brianna Bone (Morrisdale, PA/West Branch) started at pitcher and took the loss, going three innings and surrendering four earned runs. Madalyn Maynard (Towanda, PA/Towanda) tossed three scoreless, hitless innings in relief, allowing just two walks while striking out three batters.

Susquehanna scored first on Zoe Bork's two-out, two-run double to left-center field in the bottom of the first inning.

Penn State Altoona cut its deficit in half in the top of the third inning. Karli Storm (Chest Springs, PA/Cambria Heights) reached on an infield error, stole second, and scored on Feathers' two-out triple to right, making it 2-1.

But the River Hawks answered right away, expanding their lead to 6-1 in the bottom half of the third by getting four runs across, all with two outs. Bork drove in two more runs with her triple to right center, and she scored on an infield error in the next at-bat. One batter later, Kelsey Burrows' RBI single to right put the Susquehanna advantage at five, 6-1.

Penn State Altoona closed the door on any further scoring by Susquehanna, but the River Hawks did the same to the Lions, forcing the visitors to strand six runners over the final four innings to maintain their five-run cushion.

Game Two: Susquehanna 2, Penn State Altoona 1

Penn State Altoona trailed 2-0 going into the top of the seventh, but the Lions cut the Susquehanna lead to one and threatened to even the score. However, after getting the tying run to third base, Penn State Altoona was unable to bring it home, and the River Hawks escaped with a one-run victory.

Alyssa Fisher (Lock Haven, PA/Central Mountain) accounted for half of the Lions' hits with a three-hit performance at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double, a triple, and an RBI. Krawcion was 1-for-3 with a run scored, and Colledge and Gianna Hoppel (Lewistown, PA/Mifflin County) were also both 1-for-3. Hoppel's hit was the 100th of her collegiate career.

Josselyn Nau (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) pitched a strong, complete-game effort in the circle but was saddled with the loss. Nau held Susquehanna to two runs on six hits and one walk while striking out a pair, pitching all six innings.

Susquehanna broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third on Lexi Palumbo's RBI single. Palumbo doubled the home team's lead in the fifth, hitting a two-out solo home run to left to increase the River Hawks' advantage to 2-0.

Penn State Altoona made some noise in the top of the seventh, but ultimately fell short. With two outs, Krawcion kept the Lions alive with a base hit to right-center field, and Fisher followed with an RBI triple to right to narrow the Susquehanna lead to 2-1. But the River Hawks induced a pop up for the final out, and the home team iced the close win in game two.

Penn State Altoona softball returns home for its next games, as the Lions will host USCAA opponent Penn State Schuylkill for a doubleheader on Monday, April 1 at 3 p.m.
