Lions, Eagles Play to 0-0 Draw

HUNTINGDON, Pa. – While there was plenty of rain, thunder, and lightning, goals were nowhere to be found on Sunday evening at Gibbel Stadium, as the Penn State Altoona women's soccer team played to a 0-0 tie with non-conference opponent Juniata College.

Playing in its second contest in as many days, the Penn State Altoona (0-2-1) squad battled the conditions in a matchup against its nearby out-of-league opponent. Play was halted with 1:25 remaining in the first half due to lightning, and the delay spanned over 90 minutes as storms passed through the area.

After the storms left the immediate vicinity, the teams resumed play for the remainder of the period. A two-minute break was taken in lieu of a traditional halftime, and the teams quickly picked up play for the second half.

But another 45-minute period resulted in the same deadlock, and the Lions and Eagles (0-1-1) finished the game in a scoreless tie.

Adeline Baustert (Apollo, PA/Apollo-Ridge) made her third straight start at goalkeeper for Penn State Altoona and registered one save to pick up her first shutout of the season.

Mallorie Smith (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) led the Lions with five shot attempts, including three shots on goal. Sarah Huston (Coatesville, PA/Coatesville) and Sadie McConnell (New Enterprise, PA/Northern Bedford) each attempted two shots and put one on goal. Hannah Brubaker (San Diego, CA/Scripps Ranch) also recorded one shot on goal.

As a team, Penn State Altoona outshot Juniata 11-5, including a 6-1 margin in shots on goal. The teams were split with four corner kicks apiece.

Next, the Penn State Altoona women's soccer team will prepare for its home opener this upcoming Wednesday, September 7 at 6:30 p.m., when the Lions will take on Presidents' Athletic Conference foe Washington & Jefferson College in a game at Spring Run Stadium.
