Hawks Quiet Lions’ Bats in Doubleheader Sweep

HAMBURG, N.Y. – The Penn State Altoona baseball team was limited to two runs and nine hits over 16 innings on Friday afternoon, and Hilbert College took advantage by posting a doubleheader sweep over the Lions in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference action as FSSJ Field.

Hilbert (21-14, 10-6) had an 8-0 victory in game one before defeating the Lions (16-17, 7-7 AMCC) 8-2 in the nightcap.

Game One: Hilbert 8, Penn State Altoona 0

Hilbert quieted the Lions' bats in game one, limiting Penn State Altoona to just four hits.

Jake Hillard (State College, PA/State College) was 2-for-3 with a stolen base, while Tyreke Green (Altoona, PA/Altoona) and Alex Hlivia (Pennsylvania Furnace, PA/State College) had one hit apiece.

Eli Wiles (Kittanning, PA/Armstrong) pitched a complete game for the Lions while taking the loss. The righty went six innings and yielded seven earned runs while handing out four strikeouts.

Hilbert took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on Jack Duffek's two-run double to left. The Hawks made it 3-0 in the second, when Gavin McAndrews came home on a wild pitch.

In the fourth, Nolan Evans' RBI triple gave the home team a four-run advantage, and he scored on a wild pitch to increase Hilbert's lead to 5-0. Duffek's RBI groundout upped the Hawks' lead to six runs by the end of the fourth.

Patrick Whelan's two-run single to center in the sixth padded Hilbert's lead, and the Hawks ultimately won 8-0.

Game Two: Hilbert 8, Penn State Altoona 2

Down 3-0 early, the Lions managed to score two runs in the third to make it a one-run game. But Hilbert put up zeros the rest of the way and pulled away late, helped by a four-run eighth inning.

Zach Ingold (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) was 1-for-2 with a double and two walks, while Grayson McClain (Mount Union, PA/Mount Union) also went 1-for-2 with two walks and a run scored.

Hillard and Jonathan Rauch (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) had one hit and one RBI apiece, while Corey Chamberlain (Claysburg, PA/Claysburg-Kimmel) also had a hit for the Lions.

Mack Meengs (State College, PA/State College) started on the mound and suffered the loss, after the left-hander pitched six innings, yielded four runs, and struck out four batters along the way. Cameron Dubbs (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra) tossed a scoreless seventh inning out of the bullpen while recording two strikeouts, and Cole Brechbill (Hagerstown, MD/North Hagerstown) pitched the eighth inning with one earned run against.

Hilbert struck for two runs in the bottom of the first inning, when Jairo Santos' two RBI double to right gave the Hawks an early lead. Evans' RBI single to center in the second made it 3-0.

The Lions scored their first runs of the day in the top of the third, getting two across to narrow their deficit to one. Hlivia walked and McClain singled to start the inning, and Green's sacrifice bunt moved both runners up a base. Hillard's sac fly to center allowed Hlivia to score from third, and Rauch followed with an RBI single to right that brought home Green, making it 3-2.

Hilbert got a run back in the fourth, when Evans' two-out RBI double to left put the Hawks up by two, 4-2.

Hilbert expanded its lead to six in the bottom of the eighth inning, when the Hawks tacked four more runs on to their total. Run-scoring hits from John Riviere-Vejas, Whelan, and Duffek, along with a Santos sac fly, gave the home team a strong 8-2 advantage going into the final inning.

Next up, Penn State Altoona baseball closes out its regular season schedule at home this Sunday, April 28, hosting AMCC opponent Wells College for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Prior to game one, the Lions will hold their Senior Day ceremony.
