Men’s Soccer Ties La Roche 2-2

PITTSBURGH – In its last conference game of the 2022 regular season, the Penn State Altoona men's soccer team tied Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent La Roche University 2-2 at the Baierl Athletic Complex on Tuesday afternoon.

Sebastian Tem (Panama City, Panama/Balboa Academy) and Ethan Firth (York, PA/Central York) each scored their first collegiate goals for Penn State Altoona (4-8-1, 2-4-1 AMCC).

Alexander Ferry (Warren, PA/Warren) made his 13th start at goalkeeper for the Lions, recording seven saves while adding a tie to his season record.

Penn State Altoona made it 1-0 just under 10 minutes into the game. Daniel Persiko (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) launched a pass ahead from near midfield, and Tem collected it and scored at 9:41 for the game's first goal.

The Lions held their one-goal lead until midway through the second half, when La Roche (0-13-2, 0-6-1 AMCC) struck to tie the game on a Tyler Bryan goal at 64:18.

Penn State Altoona responded quickly to reclaim the lead, putting the go-ahead goal on the board less than six minutes later. Cameron McCarthy (Bloomsburg, PA/Bloomsburg) set up Firth, who beat the keeper at 70:04 to put the Lions back on top, 2-1.

But the Lions' lead was short-lived, as Jake Gorman's goal at 76:23 pulled La Roche even on the scoreboard, 2-2.

After the tying goal, Penn State Altoona's attack produced four shots on goal over the remainder of the period, but the Lions were unable to come up with a winning tally in the closing minutes, and the contest ended in a tie.

La Roche held a 22-20 edge over Penn State Altoona in total shots attempted, while the Lions led 14-9 in shots on goal and 5-4 in corner kicks.

McCarthy tied the game-high in shots on goal with three, while Owen Myers (Spring Grove, PA/Spring Grove), Alexander Rubio (Woodbridge, VA/St. John Paul the Great), Firth, and Tem each finished with two shots on goal.

The men's soccer team will wrap up its regular season schedule on the road this Thursday, October 27 against non-conference opponent Lancaster Bible College at 6 p.m. The contest was originally scheduled for Friday, but it was moved up to Thursday due to scheduling conflicts with the upcoming conference postseason tournament.

After that, the Lions will move to postseason action to compete in the first round of the AMCC Tournament this Saturday, October 29. Penn State Altoona, the fifth seed in the tournament, will travel to play fourth seed Pitt-Greensburg in a 2 p.m. matchup.
