Lady Lions Defeat Juniata 8-1

ALTOONA, Pa. – Penn State Altoona women's tennis started the month of October with a win, as the Lady Lions took down non-conference opponent Juniata College 8-1 on Monday afternoon at the Adler Tennis Courts.

The win is Penn State Altoona's first victory over Juniata since October 1, 2004, snapping a six-match losing streak to their regional non-league foes.

The Lady Lions (6-4) cruised through doubles play, as the tandems of Jessica Stevens (Altoona, PA/Altoona)/Sadie Buzan (Malvern, PA/Great Valley), Annie Ruggles (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg)/Brayley Lewis (Roaring Spring, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle), and Victoria Acker (Cresson, PA/Penn Cambria)/Sophia Girol (South Park, PA/South Park) all won by scores of 8-2.

Next, Penn State Altoona proceeded to win five out of six singles matches against Juniata (0-2). Stevens improved to 10-0 this season in singles, knocking off her opponent in the No. 1 match by a 6-0, 6-0 decision. Lewis battled to a 6-2, 2-6, 14-12 win in the No. 2 slot, and Buzan earned a tough 6-0, 2-6, 10-8 victory in the No. 3 singles match. Ruggles prevailed 6-0, 7-5 in No. 5 singles, and Acker rounded things out with a 6-0, 6-0 win in the No. 6 spot.

For its next match, women's tennis will host Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Pitt-Bradford this Saturday, October 6 at 1:00 p.m. at the Adler Tennis Courts. That match will be part of a women's-men's tennis doubleheader, as the Penn State Altoona men's tennis team will also take on Pitt-Bradford that day at the same time.
