Panthers Outlasted by Mavericks, Fall in Overtime

Buffalo, N.Y. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford men's basketball team was unable to answer a late game-tying layup by Medaille on Wednesday night, as they fell to the Mavericks 99-94 in overtime.

  • The Panthers jumped out to a quick lead as Nathan Schneider was able to make a layup on the opening possession of the game and Isaiah Archie was able to steal the ball, get out on the fast break and throw down a two-handed slam dunk within the first minute of play. The hosts were able to respond quickly, eventually grabbing a one-point lead but a Greg Archie three put the Panthers back in front with 15:32 to go.
  • The teams traded baskets for the next 7 minutes before the Panthers were able to go on a quick 9-2 run to earn a 10-point advantage. Isaiah Archie started the run with a driving layup, and Caden Beldin quickly made another basket inside to answer a Medaille jumper. Archie made two free throws to push the lead to 7 and then hit a three from the wing to put the Panthers up 29-19.
  • Medaille slowly whittled the lead back to 6 points, but Schneider and Alex Rodriguez hit two three-pointers around a Maverick three to keep the advantage at 9 points. After an Isaiah Archie layup put the Panthers up 11 with 1:37 to go, Medaille scored 5 unanswered to end the first half and send the game to the break with the Panthers leading 43-37.
  • The hosts continued their momentum after halftime, outscoring the Panthers 7-3 over the first two and a half minutes of the 2nd cutting the lead to just two points. Schneider ended the rally with another long ball and Trey Oyler made a midrange jumper with 15:08 t go to put the Panthers up 7. The Mavericks followed the Oyler bucket with a quick 10-0 run that saw them take a three-point lead with 12:30 to go. They went on to extend this to 6 points with 9:53 remaining.
  • The Panthers slowly cut away at the deficit, eventually tying the game at 73 with another Schneider three-pointer and then taking the lead a possession later on an Oyler layup. After the Mavericks quickly evened the score, Oyler came through again, this time hitting a three from the corner to put the Panthers up three. Pitt-Bradford maintained this advantage for the next minute and a half, as Schneider made two free throws after a Medaille layup and Rodriguez answered a three-point play with another dagger from beyond the arc with just under 3 minutes remaining.
  • Unfortunately for the Panthers, the Rodriguez three would be the last points they would score in regulation, as they were unable to convert on four late possessions, allowing the Mavericks to stay in the game. Following a Panther turnover with 14 seconds to go, Medaille was able to get inside and tie the game with just three seconds to go. Greg Archie was able to move down court and get an open look at a game-winner but saw his leaning jump shot roll off the rim to send the game to overtime.
  • In the extra period, the Mavericks built off the momentum of their late basket, quickly taking a four-point lead. Lennon Lindholm made a driving layup to cut it back to two but saw the hosts score two more unanswered baskets to go ahead 91-85 with 3 minutes to go.
  • Three Panther free throws got Pitt-Bradford back to within one possession, but the Mavericks were able to make 6 of 8 down the stretch to close out the game.

Nathan Schneider finished as the game's high scorer and rebounder, as he totaled 32 points and 16 rebounds. He made 10-17 from the field, including 3-3 from beyond the arc. He played all 45 minutes for the Panthers. Isaiah Archie scored 19 points in the game, while his brother Greg Archie scored 11 and had 5 assists. Trey Oyler and Alex Rodriguez also finished with 11 points each. Oyler was especially efficient as he made 4-5 from the field, 1-1 from three, and 2-2 from the free-throw line.

The Panthers fall to 8-8 on the season with a 3-4 record in AMCC play. They will wrap up their first turn through the conference schedule with a matchup against LaRoche on Saturday. The game is scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. tipoff.
