Beavers drop 7-3 decision to Pitt-Greensburg

DAVENPORT, Fla. - The Bluffton University baseball team struggled to get any clutch hits in a 7-3 loss to Pitt-Greensburg on Tuesday, March 4, 2025. The Beavers fell to 1-3, while Greensburg improved to 1-6 on the season.

The visitors on the scoreboard jumped out to  2-0 lead in the first following a base hit, a triple and an RBI groundout, putting the Beavers in a quick hole before they took their first turn at the plate. Although Bluffton put together three straight knocks in the bottom of the frame, the score remained 2-0 thanks to an outfield assist for the Bobcats.

Freshman Trey Pipenger (Richmond, Ind.) stole home in the third and pinch hitter Brody Hammersley (Coshocton) plated Jack Towell (Batavia/West Clermont) with an RBI groundout in the eighth, making it 4-2 Greensburg heading to the ninth.

The Bobcats tacked on three unearned tallies in the ninth thanks to a pair of costly Bluffton miscues, putting the game out of reach. Towell singled home Jake Baumgartner (Toledo/Start), but it was too little, too late, as Greensburg notched its first victory of the season.

Towell, Ethan Moore (Bellefontaine) and Justin Maurer (Springfield/Kenton Ridge) all rapped two hits on Tuesday.

Jaden Jaques (New Palestine, IN) took the loss after giving up four runs on seven hits in 4.2 innings of work. He struck out three and walked one. Alexander James (Vandalia/Butler) tossed 2.1 innings of no-hit relief, allowing just one baserunner.

Bluffton will suit up again on Wednesday, March 5, when the Beavers take on Trine from the MIAA at 9 a.m.
