La Roche Brings Home win Against Hilbert

Hamburg, NY - This afternoon the La Roche Redhawks (4-2, 1-0) traveled to Hilbert College (1-9, 0-2) for their second conference game of the season.

The Redhawks started Makayla Abram (Steubenville, OH), Danajah Sanders (Cleveland, OH), Machia Hairston (Pittsburgh, PA), Shaundrea Butler (Cleveland, OH), and Nia Thomas (Brackenridge, PA).

Starting for the Hawks was Alesia Hamm (Buffalo, NY), Kendyl Kerner (Depew, NY), Macy Kisner (Stanley, NY), Mackenzie Catan (Oneonta, NY), and Ashley Schroeder (Caledonia, MN).  

First Period

Winning the tip for the Redhawks was Hairston, she gave the Redhawks the first possession, as well as their first two points in the paint. 

The Hawks answered several minutes later with a two point jump shot of their own from Schroeder. 

Both teams went scoreless until there was 5:35 remaining in the period, Danajah Sanders was the first on the board after almost three minutes without a basket for either team. 

Hilbert called their first time out after Sanders came down the court again, the Redhawks now up 6-2. 

Kisner  was finally able to get a basket to fall her way. In fact she completed the basket, got Janessa Goins to pick up her first foul. Kisner also completed the foul shot putting the Hawks only down by one (6-5, LRU). 

Hilbert was able to over take the lead with a layup from Hamm, assisted by Schroeder after a fastbreak down the court. 

Shaundrea Butler for the Redhawks went to the foul line and went one for two, she tied the game up 7-7. 

The Hawks were able to take the lead once again with another fastbreak layup from Kiser. 

In the very next possession for the Hawks, Schroeder went up for the lay up, netted it, giving the hawks a two point lead. 

Another fast break down the floor for Hilbert and a made layup from Kisber had Hilbert up 13-7 with less than two minutes remaining in the period

With 1:58 remaining in the first period a time out is called by La Roche. 

Hairston goes up for two and puts the Redhawks back within four (13-9).

Another jump shot at the foul line by Schroeder for the Hawks puts LRU back down by six. 

Kisner  hit a freethrow and captured another point on the board for HC. 

At the end of the quarter, the score is 16 Hilbert, and 9 La Roche. 

Second Period

Butler went to the line for two and she was able to knock them down. 

The Hawks quickly answered however, with another fastbreak layup from Kisner. 

Goins was finally able to get one to fall her way, adding two points to the score for the Redhawks.

Sanders hit her first, and the teams first three point shot of the game, assisted by Butler, decreasing the Hawks' lead by four points. 

Schroeder comes down the court however and is fouled in the act of shooting and she goes two for two at the line. 

The Redhawks took a page out of the hawks' book and Hairston was able to complete a fast break layup of her own, assisted by DJ Whittington. 

With five minutes remaining in the half the score was 24-20 in favor of Hilbert. 

Sanders was fouled in the act of shooting and she goes to the foul line to make it a three point play, she completes it and the Redhawks are now only down by one (24-23).

Thomas ties up the game 26-26 with a jump shot made. 

Hilbert doesn't let that slide, and Schroeder goes up for a layup of her own, gaining back the lead. 

But the Redhawks quickly answered at the other end. Hairston tied up the game once more 28-28. 

Hairston earns the chance to hit two on the free throw line. She misses the first, but sinks the second. (30-29, Hilbert). 

Sophia Yoder gives the Redhawks the lead with a fast break layup that she completes (31-30, LRU). 

The Hawks quickly take it back with a made lay up by insert name (32-31, HC). 

Hilbert capitalizes on their lead with a backdoor layup by Grace Zabawa. 

With four seconds remaining in the first period Sanders is fouled on her way up, and she heads to the line. She fails to complete either shot. 

At the end of the second quarter the scores are 34 for Hilbert, and 31 for La Roche. 

Third Quarter

The Hawks have the ball to start the third quarter, they turn it over giving the Redhawks a chance to be their first ones on the board in the second half of this contest.

LRU connects the shot on their end of the court putting them down by only one, but then fouls at the other end of the court. giving Hamm a chance to be the first to score in the second half. Hamm hits one foul shot out of two. 

Hilbert continues on with the trend and is able to put another jumpshot to their list of made shots; another made basket from Kisner (37-33, HC). 

Thomas gets the Redhawks back within one possession with a quick hookshot in the paint. 

Butler gets a layup to fall in traffic tying the game up for the first time since the start of the new period at 37-37. 

Yoder is fouled in the act of shooting and she goes to the line for two, with a chance to take the lead. She nets both (39-37, LRU). 

The lead doesn't last for long as Kisner hits a turnaround jump shot and sinks it. 

Abram however, answers with a sinking shot from field goal range, assisted by Sanders. The Redhawks lead 42-39. 

A shot clock violation on the Hawks gives La Roche the chance to add to their lead. 

Butler does it by sinking a three point shot, increasing the LRU lead to 47-39. 

Schroeder goes to the line for the Hawks, she hits the first, but misses the second. 

Hilbert gets another one to roll their way, a layup from Schroeder, with 30 seconds remaining in the period (47-42, LRU). 

Thomas catches and shoots the ball out of the inbound pass from Butler, and she hits a three point shot, putting the Redhawks up by eight at the end of the third period (50-42, LRU). 

Fourth Quarter

To start the final period the Hawks are the first ones on the board with a layup by Hamm. 

Sanders answers with a three point shot of her own, assisted by Butler, putting the Redhawks back up by nine. 

Butler the next possession knocks down a three point buck of her own, assisted by Abram. 

With the score 56-44 in favor of La Roche, Hilbert calls their first timeout of the period (7:30). 

Thomas grabs a steal and takes it coast to coast for a fastbreak lay up, increasing the LRU lead to 14. 

Hamm is fouled in the act of shooting, she sinks it and gets the chance to turn it into a three point play, but does not hit the foul shot. 

Catan continues to fight for the Hawks and puts up a shot at three point range which she nets (60-48, LRU). The Hawks were back within 12. 

Sanders takes her turn at the foul line. She hits them both (62-48, LRU). 

Hamm gets Hilbert back on the board with one minute remaining in the game, with a layup.

Hairston answers with a layup of her own in the final seconds of the game, as does Abrams. The final score of the game (66-50, LRU). 

Final Thoughts

The leading scorer for the Hawks was Macy Kisner. Kisner played 39 minutes, and had a double-double. She scored 20 points, accompanied by 13 rebounds. Kisner also contributed three steals, and two assists.

Following shortly behind her was Ashley Schroeder who had 15 points, four rebounds, two assists, two steals, and one block. 

Danajah Sanders was the leading scorer for La Roche. Sanders had 17 points on the night. She also contributed three rebounds, two assists, one block and one steal. 

Two Redhawks also had double-doubles tonight. 

The first was Machia Hairston, her second of the season. Hairston had a total of 13 points and 12 rebounds. 

Nia Thomas had her first double-double of the season. Thomas netted 12 points and snagged 10 rebounds. Thomas also had three steals, and two blocks. 

The final Redhawk to have double digits tonight was Shaundrea Butler with 11. Butler also had five assists, and two steals.
