Panthers Drop Game Two at UPG Trimatch

Greensburg, Pa. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford took on Maine-Fort Kent in their second game of the day at the Pitt-Greensburg tri-match, falling to the Bengals in straight sets.

Coming off of a victory over Pitt-Greensburg in game one of the day, the Panthers got off to a slow start, dropping the opening set 25-16. They were able to recover and battle to the end of the next two sets, but were unable to come away with a win in either, falling 25-23 and 26-24.

The Panthers stayed with the Bengals at the start but fell behind on 3 straight errors to drop back to a 2-6 lead. The Panthers were unable to gather any momentum throughout the rest of the set, as they were never able to score more than two points in a row. This allowed Maine-Fort Kent to continue to build their lead, eventually winning the set 25-16.

Pitt-Bradford fell behind to start set two as well, as the Bengals took an early 1-4 lead. The Panthers battled back to get to within one but started a trend that would continue for the rest of the set. They were unable to tie the set and saw their opponent jump back ahead by 5. The Panthers went on to cut into the lead multiple times but saw their opponents jump back ahead and push their advantage back to 4. They were finally able to tie the set at 22 and again at 23, but followed each tie with a service error. The Bengals were able to put down a final kill after the second service error to end the set.

The Panthers got off to a much better start in set three, as they quickly jumped out to a 6-2 lead. They pushed their lead to 6 on a 4-point run with Dylan Amic serving. The rally started with a pair of kills by Olivia Reese, which were followed by back-to-back aces from Amic. Both teams were able to go on multi-point runs through the middle portion of the set before two Kayla Maslowski aces put the Panthers ahead 21-14. The Panthers were able to limit rallies from the Bengals, remaining ahead 23-17 after a Kaitlyn Sexton kill, but were unable to finish down the stretch. The Panthers committed 6 errors and failed to receive two serves, allowing the Bengals to come back and close the match with a 24-26 win.

Olivia Reese led the Panthers with 10 kills. She also led the team with 7 digs. Tabitha Walker had 20 assists in the game and added an ace and 5 digs. Dylan Amic had 4 aces.

The Panthers drop to 8-13 on the season after the loss. The Panthers will return to AMCC play next week as they will return home to host a pair of pivotal games. They will begin by hosting AMCC-leading Alfred State on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. in KOA Arena.
