Panther Comeback Falls Short against Bobcats

Nathan Schneider makes a pass against Pitt-Greensburg. FINAL SCORE Pitt-Bradford 95 - Pitt-Greensburg 104

Bradford, Pa. -- The University of Pittsburgh men's basketball team battled back from a 16 point deficit to get within two points but were unable to complete the comeback, falling to Pitt-Greensburg 104-95.

  • The Panthers got off to a slow start as they were held scoreless for the first 1:55 of play, allowing the visiting Bobcats to jump ahead 4-0. The Panthers answered the early deficit quickly as Dylan Meyer made baskets on back-to-back possessions to tie the game and Alex Rodriguez put the Panthers ahead with a three from the corner.  Following a Pitt-Greensburg three, Nathan Schneider scored six straight for Pitt-Bradford to give the Panthers an early 6-point advantage and force a Bobcat time out.
  • After the timeout, the Panthers allowed a layup inside but quickly responded with layups from Greg Archie and Meyer to push their lead to 8 with 14 minutes on the clock. The Panthers maintained this advantage until the 7:40 mark, when they were held to just two free throws over a nearly three-minute span, allowing the visitors to take a 33-32 lead.
  • Pitt Greensburg pushed their advantage to eight points with 1:46 to go until halftime, but the Panthers put together a late run to cut into the lead. Rodriguez hit a three-pointer and then two free throws on the following possession to narrow the lead to three. Gavyn Mason made a jumper to put the Panthers down one, and then answered a par of Bobcat free throws with a last-second lay-up to send the game to the break with the Panthers trailing 51-50.
  • The Panthers came out of the halftime break slow, allowing the Bobcats to score the first seven points of the quarter to restore their eight-point advantage.  A pair of Isaiah Archie layups and another from Mason saw the Panthers slow the Pitt-Greensburg charge temporarily, but a 14-3 run saw the Bobcats push their lead into double-digits. Trey Oyler was able to keep Pitt-Bradford within shouting distance midway through the half, as he hit three consecutive threes for the Panthers.
  • Down 13 with 6:24 to go, the Panthers shut down the visitors for the next four and a half minutes, allowing them to whittle the lead down to just two points. Nathan Schneider scored four straight to start the run, and then after grabbing a long rebound, found Isaiah Archie on the break. Archie raced down court and threw down a powerful two-handed slam dunk to cut the lead to 7. Following a bobcat basket, Greg Archie scored 5 of 7 for the Panthers, including two free throws to put the Panthers down 93-91 with just over two minutes remaining.
  • Archie made two more from the charity stripe to answer a Pitt-Greensburg basket but turned the ball over twice in the final minute attempting to drive to the basket, allowing the Bobcats to extend their advantage. They made 7 of 8 free throws down the stretch to put the game away.

Nathan Schneider finished the game with 28 points on 12 of 17 from the field. He also made 4 of 5 from the line. Schneider notched his 5th double-double of the season, as he also grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds. Isaiah Archie scored 15 points for the Panthers, while Greg Archie also added 11. Gavyn Mason had an efficient offensive showing for the Panthers, scoring 9 points on 4 of 5 shooting in just 12 minutes of play.

The Panthers fall to 5-5 on the season, with a 1-2 record in AMCC play. They will be right back in action in KOA Arena on Monday, as they will host Penn State-DuBois in their final contest of 2021. The game is slated for an afternoon tip-off at 1:00 p.m.
