Redhawks Outlast Yellow Jackets In Extra Innings

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – La Roche baseball ended a four game skid on Wednesday afternoon, taking down Waynesburg, 8-7 in extra innings.

After two scoreless innings, the Redhawks jumped in front, scoring six runs in the bottom of the third inning.

Damon Foster opened things up with a two RBI single, then two batters later, Andy Sopata delivered an RBI single.

Tanner Schmitt scored the fourth run of the inning thank to a Yellow Jacket error, then Tyler Smith provided a two RBI single to make it 6-0.

Waynesburg would add a run in the top of the fourth, but Sopata would get the run back in the bottom half of the inning, as his sacrifice fly scored DJ Loveland.

The Yellow Jackets got another run in the top of the fifth to cut the deficit to 7-2, then battled all the way back in the top of the eighth, plating five runs to force extra innings.

In the bottom of the 10th, La Roche opened the inning with a double off the bat of Smith, then Christian Melendez laid down a sacrifice bunt and the throw to first was off target, allowing pinch runner Troy Sallis to score and give the Redhawks the victory.

Bryson Bubb got the start and in the no decision, went six innings, allowing two runs (one earned), six hits, one walk and struck out five.

Zach Jackson earned the win, setting Waynesburg down in order in the final inning.

Offensively, La Roche picked up nine hits, with Smith's 3-for-5 leading the way, while he, Sopata and Foster all drove in two runs.

The Redhawks return to action Saturday, Mar. 29 when they host Pitt-Bradford for their first home AMCC matchup. The doubleheader is set to begin at 1 p.m.
