MISENHEIMER, N.C. - La Roche baseball began its trip down south to Florida with a pit stop in North Carolina to meet Pfeiffer in doubleheader action. In the end, it was the Falcons getting the best of the Redhawks, 8-2 and 13-0 F/7.
Game One: Pfeiffer 8 La Roche 2
After three scoreless innings, Pfeiffer jumped ahead in the bottom of the fourth inning, plating five runs to take a strong lead.
La Roche's first run came immediately after, in the top of the fifth, when Christian Melendez grounded into an RBI fielder's choice to make it 5-1.
The Falcons then scored single runs in the bottom of innings five, six and seven, building an 8-1 edge.
The Redhawks final run came in the top of the ninth, as Melendez drove in his second run of the game with an RBI single.
Larry Bielawski got the start and in four innings, allowed six runs, eight hits and struck out five.
Four relievers combined to throw the remaining four innings, allowing two runs (one earned), five hits, three walks and struck out two.
Offensively, Tanner Schmitt led the way with a 3-for-5 showing, while Melendez and Brandon Snyder each had two hits.
Game Two: Pfeiffer 13 La Roche 0 F/7
Unfortunately, game two was all Falcons and the scoring started in the bottom of the second with a single run to make it 1-0.
Fast forward to the bottom of the fourth, Pfeiffer would plate seven runs, another single run in the fifth and then sealed the victory with a four spot in the bottom of the sixth.
Eli Thomas took the loss, allowing five runs, three hits, four walks and struck out one in 3.1 innings.
Four relievers again combined for 2.2 innings and allowed eight runs, nine hits, two walks and struck out two.
Offensively, Bielawski, Caden Maffitt and Andy Sopata combined for the three hits in the game.
La Roche begins play at the Russmatt Invitational on Tuesday, Mar. 11 in Auburndale, Fla. The first of five matchups over four days is against Fitchburg State at 3:45 p.m.
