Panthers Fall to SUNY Poly in Brodie Tournament Championship Game

Rochester, N.Y. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford men's basketball team took on SUNY Poly in the Championship game of the Harold J. Brodie Tournament on Sunday afternoon, falling to the Wildcats 82-60.

  • The Panthers got off to a strong start in the matchup, as they jumped out to a 10-2 lead. Nathan Schneider made a layup on the opening possession of the game, and then fed Isaiah Archie on the next possession to go up 4-0. Following two SUNY Poly free throws, Caden Beldin made a basket inside and Schneider added two more in quick succession.
  • Another Schneider layup put the Panthers up 14-7, but the Panthers went cold after the basket, as they were held scoreless for the next four and a half minutes, allowing the Wildcats to go ahead 22-14. Back-to-back threes from Trey Oyler cut the lead to two, but the Wildcats answered with 8 straight to push the advantage back to double-digits. Pit Bradford responded with seven straight on layups from Schneider and Greg Archie and an Alex Rodriguez three, but SUNY Poly made back-to-back baskets in the final minute to send the game to the break with the Panthers down 34-27.
  • After the break, the Wildcats were able to quickly push their lead back to 10, but the Panthers were able to roll off 8 straight in a two-minute span. Schneider started the run with a layup inside and after drawing a charge, Isaiah Archie made a free throw to restore the halftime deficit. Two more Panther stops resulted in five quick points from Lennon Lindholm put the Panthers down 37-35.
  • Unfortunately for the Panthers, the energy expended in multiple comebacks over two days saw them unable to keep up with the Wildcats for the remainder of the contest. They quickly pushed the lead back to double digits, and slowly extended the lead for the remainder of the game. They were able to get the deficit back to single digits once, as a Greg Archie jumper put the Panthers down 56-48, but it was quickly answered by SUNY Poly.

Nathan Schneider was the lone Panther to score in double-digits, as he finished with 26 points. He shot 9 of 18 from the field and made 7 of 10 from the line. He also led the team with 8 rebounds and 5 assists.

After the game, two Panthers, Isaiah Archie, and Nathan Schneider were named to the All-Tournament Team. Archie had the big game in the opener, scoring 35 points. He was held in check in the Championship game, as he scored 6 points on 2-6 shooting. He averaged 20.5 points per game in the Tournament. Schneider averaged 20 points, 9 rebounds, and 5.5 assists per game in the tournament.

The loss drops the Panthers to 4-2 on the season. They will return to KOA Arena for their second home game of the season on Thursday. They will take on Alfred University at 5:30 p.m.
