Panthers Rally in 2nd Half, but Fall to Penn State-Altoona

Bradford, Pa. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford men's basketball team rallied to cut a 16-point Penn State-Altoona 2nd half lead to just 5, before seeing their opponents pull away for a 97-79 loss.

  • The Panthers fell behind early, as the visiting Lions were able to score on their first two possessions. After Nathan Schneider opened the scoring, they pushed their lead to 6. Schneider worked to keep the Panthers within reach of the Lions, scoring the first 9 points of the game for Pitt-Bradford. After a Trey Oyler jumper from the elbow, the visitors quickly reestablished a 7 point lead. The Panthers were quickly able to close the gap, as Oyler and Schneider hit threes on back-to-back possessions. 
  • As the first half continued on, the Lions would jump ahead, and the Panthers were able to quickly respond and get the deficit back to one point. The Lions pushed their lead to 8 with 9 minutes to go, but another Oyler long ball and a putback effort from Gavyn Mason cut into the advantage. The Lions were able to add two jumpers in the next minute of play, but each was answered by a Pitt-Bradford triple. The first came from Oyler and the second from his fellow freshman Lennon Lindholm.
  • Mason made another inside jumper with 2:44 to go in the half to put the Panthers down 40-38, but the Lions were able to close the half on a 13-5 run to take a 10 point lead into the half.
  • The Lions built on this momentum after the break, increasing their lead to 16 points after four minutes of play. Following a Panther timeout, Oyler hit two free throws and Hayden Adams made a three from the corner to begin cutting into the lead.
  • The Lions maintained a double-digit lead until there was 8:33 on the clock when Nathan Schneider converted the first of two consecutive three-point plays to whittle the deficit down to six points. Lindholm answered a pair of Penn State-Altoona free throws with another three to get the lead to 5 points with 7 minutes remaining. Trey Oyler made a floating jump shot to answer a Lion basket on the following possession, but it would be the Panthers' last stand as the Lions took advantage of the fatigued Panthers to go on a 14-1 run to extend their lead back to 18 points. 
  • Both teams emptied their benches for the final two minutes of play as the Panthers were able to get a pair of free throws from Payton Barnes and a fast-break layup in the final minute from Karson Rumsky.

Nathan Schneider led the Panthers with 29 points. he made 12-22 from the field, including 2-6 from beyond the arc. He also had a game-high 13 rebounds to record a double-double for the 6th straight game. He has 13 in 19 games this season. He also had 5 assists. A pair of freshmen also set new career highs in the game Trey Oyler scored 15 points on 5-12 shooting, including 3-9 from three. Lennon Lindholm scored 9 Points making 2-3 from three.

The Panthers fall to 8-11 on the season, with a 3-7 record in AMCC play. The Panthers will head to Mount Aloysius on Wednesday, looking to end a four-game losing skid, The game is scheduled for a 7:30 start.
