Panthers Complete Sweep of Wells with 7-4 Victory

New Market, Va. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford baseball team completed a three-game sweep over Wells in New Market, Va. They won the third game 7-4 to finish the weekend.

Game Notes:

  • Senior Andrew Bacha got his first start of the season for the Panthers. He was able to get off to a good start as his offense took a few innings to score. He retired was able to put up two scoreless frames to start the day without giving up a hit. In the third, Wells was able to jump ahead. The Express scored 2 runs on 2 hits and a walk and were aided by a passed ball in the inning. 
  • The Panthers were able to strike back in the 4th. Jake McNabb drew a leadoff walk and then advanced to third on a Matt Hair double. Josh Zelinski continued the rally with an RBI single. Pitt-Bradford loaded the bases with a batter hit by a pitch and tied the game after a fielder's choice. Robert Sawicki drove a sacrifice fly to right field to bring in Zelinski to tie the game at 2. 
  • Bacha put up a big shutdown inning in the 5th, and the Panthers continued to build momentum, scoring two more in their half of the inning. Tyler Hoops led off the 4th with a triple and the Panthers loaded the bases with two walks. With two down, Samuel Dreistaft doubled to bring in 2 runs and put the Panthers ahead.
  • Alex Fetter entered the game in the 6th for the Panthers. After he retired the first two batters he faced, WElls was able to score a run on a hit batter and two singles, before Fetter got a fly ball to left to end the inning. 
  • Fetter retired the side in order in the 7th, and the Panthers rewarded him, restoring the two-run advantage. Kevin Rehak walked to lead off the inning and then moved to second on a groundout. Zelinski came through with two outs, singling home Rehak.
  • Ben Suter replaced Fetter in the 8th. He walked the first batter and then retired the next two with a strikeout and a grounder to first. With two down, Wells was able to bring the runner home for their 4th run, but centerfielder Sawyer Packard threw out the runner advancing to second to end the inning.
  • Pitt-Bradford was able to get some breathing room heading into the 9th with 2 final runs in their half of the 8th. Sawicki singled with one out and then moved to second on a Packard walk. Hoops was able to drive both runs in with his second triple of the day. The Panthers loaded the bases in the inning but were unable to do any further damage.
  • Logan Edmonds entered the game in the 9th looking to shut the door on the Express. He quickly retired the first two batters of the inning but ran into trouble when Wells brought the tying run to the plate with a two-out single and walk. Edmonds settled down and struck out a pinch hitter to bring the game and series to a close.

Leaders:

  • Andrew Bacha (1-0) picked up the win for the Panthers. He pitched 5 innings, allowing 1 earned run on 3 hits and 5 walks. he struck out 4 batters.
  • Logan Edmonds picked up his first save of the season with his scoreless 9th inning.
  • Tyler Hoops led the offense for the Panthers. The senior shortstop finished the game 2 for 4 with 2 triples, 2 RBIs and 1 run scored.
  • Joshua Zelinski was the only other Panther to record a multi-hit game, as he finished 2 for 5. He also scored 1 run and brought in 2.
  • Samuel Dreistadt went 1 for 2 with the 2 run double.

The win moves the Panthers to 4-3 on the season heading into their Spring Break trip to California. The team will travel to the west coast at the end of the week and will play their first game in California on Monday, March 9th. They will take on Occidental College at 2:00 p.m. EST.
