Redhawks Gain Top Spot in AMCC After Win Over Medaille

BUFFALO, NY - The Redhawks captured the third victory in their last four games Saturday afternoon at Medaille College, 57-51. Today's win against the Mavericks is the first road victory this season for LRU and the 12th straight against the AMCC rival. After an 11 point halftime lead, Medaille battled back to make it a one point game with two minutes left in the third, but La Roche proved to be too much and handed the winless Mavericks their 8th loss of the season. The Redhawks, now 3-0 in AMCC action, are the only team still undefeated in conference play.

How it Happened

For the third game in a row, LRU came out swinging in the first quarter, going up 16-8 after 10 minutes of action. The Redhawks shot six more shots than the Mavericks in the first going 7 of 17 from the field. In their last three games, La Roche has outscored their opponents 48-24 in the first quarter. 

In the second quarter, La Roche was able to add three to their eight point cushion to go up 30-19 heading in the half. Sophomore forward Dasja Anderson led the Redhawks with 8 points on 4 of 8 FG at the half. 

The Mavericks managed to make it a game in the third quarter, outscoring LRU 20-14 to bring the contest within 5 points. Medaille shot an impressive 9 of 16 (56%) from the floor in the third. In the other three quarters, the Mavericks shot poorly, knocking down only 12 of 39 (31%) attempts. 

The Redhawks fended of Medaille in the fourth outscoring the AMCC rival by one point to improve to 3-0 in conference play. Senior forward Jenna Cole had 12 points in the second half on 4 of 6 FG and shot a perfect 4 of 4 from the free throw line.

Jenna Cole finished with a season and game-high 19 points on 6 of 13 FG and a perfect 6 of 6 from the line. 

Junior transfer Ayanna Mazyck collected her first double-double at La Roche going for 10 points and a season/game-high 13 rebounds. Mazyck added four steals and two assists to the stat sheet. Ayanna is currently averaging an AMCC best 4.1 steals per game. 

The Redhawks have proven to be one of the most defensively tough teams in the AMCC, leading the conference with 12.7 steals per game. LRU has recorded 11 or more steals in each of their last six games including 11 today. 

La Roche forced Medaille to commit 21 turnovers and generated 21 of their 57 points off those takeaways.

LRU only dressed eight players in today's match, getting nine total points from their bench led by Sophomore guard Danajah Sander's seven.

Three Mavericks finished in double-digit figures led by Morgan Kennedy and Amanda Arnold who finished with 12 points a piece.
