AUBURNDALE, Fla. – La Roche baseball returned to action in Florida with two games on Wednesday, first, falling to Bethel, 16-6, followed by a 16-5 defeat to Bowdoin.
Game One: Bethel 16 La Roche 6 F/7
After a scoreless first inning, the Redhawks saw themselves fall behind quickly in the second, as the Royals plated six runs in the bottom half of the inning.
La Roche would get one back in the top of the third, when Liam Burns scored on a wild pitch.
Bethel was right back at it offensively, bringing home six more runs in the third and then rounded out its scoring in the fifth with four, making it 10 unanswered runs.
The Redhawks big inning came too late, scoring four in the top of the sixth inning.
Ricky Heyz started the scoring, drawing a bases loaded hit by pitch, then Tyler Smith and Tanner Schmitt followed with back-to-back RBI singles, Schmitt getting two on his, making it 16-5.
The final run scored was in the top of the seventh, when Matt Livingstone scored Dimitri Gary on an RBI fielder's choice.
Jared Hough would take the loss, allowing six runs, five hits, two walks and a strikeout in 1.2 innings of work.
Zach Jackson would follow, tossing one inning, allowing six runs, six hits and two strikeouts, followed by Eiramzared Rivera, who allowed just a hit and two walks in 1.1 innings.
Chris Tarquinio closed out the game, giving up four unearned runs, one hit and one walk across two innings.
Offensively, La Roche scattered nine hits, with Schmitt's 2-for-3 leading the way.
Game Two: Bowdoin 16 La Roche 5 F/7
Unfortunately, the tides didn't turn in favor of the Redhawks in game two, allowing 14 runs over the first four innings and 16 unanswered in total, to fall into a large hole going into the bottom of the sixth.
All five La Roche runs crossed in the bottom of the sixth, highlighted by a Jackson RBI single, RBI groundouts by Alex Perez and Danny McCaffrey, as well as a two RBI single from DJ Loveland to close the scoring.
Caden Maffitt got the start and took the loss, as he and four relievers combined to allow 16 runs (seven earned), only eight hits, walked eight, struck out eight and hit eight batters.
Offensively, Troy Sallis, Jackson and Loveland combined for the three hits in the game.
The Redhawks have another early bird special tomorrow, Mar. 13, as they square off against Calvin at 9:15 a.m.
