Women's Basketball Begins Alfred Classic at Alfred State

ALFRED, N.Y. (November 20, 2021) – The SUNY Delhi women's basketball team posted several highlights in their opening game of the Alfred Classic against Alfred State. Jennifer Roche had a double-double with 13 points off three 3-pointers and ten rebounds, Angelica Lazo had 12 points of a pair of triples, while Madilyne Kupris notched nine points and ten boards in a near double-double performance. The host Pioneers posted a 74-45 victory. SUNY Delhi will face Alfred University Sunday at 2:00 p.m. to wrap up the weekend series.

It appeared Alfred State had the advantage early on with a 14-2 lead through the first five minutes, but the Broncos rallied furiously to close the gap to 16-12 at the end of the quarter. The Pioneers, however, tilted the game back in their favor in the second quarter, outscoring the green and gold 24-9 in the period for a 40-21 lead at halftime. A-State widened its lead in the third, continuing to outscore its guests by ten points in the third quarter for the sizable victory.

The Broncos posted a season high with six made 3-pointers, while shooting 24.3 overall from the field (17-of-70). The Pioneers fared with a 38.8 field goal percentage (31-of-80) and making 8-of-18 triples. Alfred State led 60-49 in rebounds, capturing a 32-16 lead in points in the paint and 17-5 in bench points.

Saturday's game also closed out a two-game series with Alfred State, as the Pioneers took a 60-49 win at SUNY Delhi on Nov. 10. Only A-State and Marywood are two non-conference opponents Delhi faces twice this season.
