ERIE, Pa. - The No. 1 Penn State Behrend softball team opened the 2023 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Championships with a 10-2 five-inning victory against No. 4 La Roche on Thursday afternoon.

* The Behrend Lions had two four-run innings, beginning in the third to get on the board first
* Neither team recorded a hit until the third inning
* The Lions used three hits and took advantage of two errors to take a 4-0 lead
* Lexi Edgett (Frisco, TX/Lone Star) singled up the middle, before Kaitlyn Ezzone (Ashtabula, OH/Edgewood) reached on an error to get to second
* Maddie Smith (DuBois, PA/DuBois) smacked her first triple of the season into right center to send home Edgett and Ezzone
* Smith scored on the second out and Meghan Petitte (Sugarcreek, OH/Garaway) ripped a double and stole home on Emi Curcio's (Perryopolis, PA/Frazier) at-bat
* La Roche answered at the top of the fourth with a pair of runs off Alexis Myers single to center field
* Behrend scored the next six runs, two in the fourth and four in the fifth to end the game early
* Petitte went 2-for-3 and Jocelyn McNany (Cranberry Township, PA/Seneca Valley) added three RBIs
* Kayla Lindberg (Austinburg, OH/Geneva) improves to 11-5 on the season, pitching five innings and only allowing three hits on 19 batters faced
