Panthers Defeated by Saxons

Bradford, Pa. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford women's soccer team took on the Alfred University Saxons on Wednesday afternoon falling 3-1.

The Panthers were able to keep the Saxons off of the board early as Sadie wood made 4 saves in the first 24 minutes. The Panthers also successfully defended 4 early corners, keeping them level. Alfred was able to open the scoring in the 29th as they pounced on a mishandled cross in the box and slid a shot into the open net. Down 1-0, the Panthers responded immediately. 30 seconds after the restart, the Panthers drew a foul near the halfway line. Kihara Gotshall took the free kick, sending a lofted pass towards the Alfred penalty box. The pass bounced behind the Saxon defensive line where McKenna Kelly was able to run onto it and chip a shot over the onrushing goalkeeper to even the game. The goal was the first open play goal for Pitt-Bradford and the first of Kelly's career. Wood made another save and got some help from the woodwork later on as the game went to halftime tied at 1.

Coming out of the break, the Saxons came out firing, attacking the Panther defense. registering 3 corners and 5 shots in the first 8 minutes of play. In the 54th minute, Alfred was able to break through on a long shot that Wood was unable to reach to break the tie. 10 minutes later, the Saxons added a second as Wood and the Pitt-Bradford defense was unable to clear a corner kick, which was never touched in play and bounced into the corner of the net for a goal. The Panthers were only able to muster 1 shot on goal in the half as Riley Stowe carved out some space for a long-range effort which was handled by the goalkeeper. 

McKenna Kelly scored the lone goal for the Panthers. It was her first of the season and her career. Kihara Gotshall was awarded the assist, the second of her career. Riley Stowe registered the Panthers' only other shot on goal. Sadie wood made 11 saves in the game, allowing 3 goals, her lowest total of the season.

The Panthers drop to 0-4 with the loss. They will be back on the pitch in Bradford this weekend, as they will host Houghton at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
