
AUBURNDALE, Fla. – La Roche baseball battled Calvin in doubleheader action on Thursday, but unfortunately couldn't get past the Knights in either contest.
Game One: Calvin 10 La Roche 8
After 3.5 scoreless innings, the Redhawks hit the scoreboard first in the bottom of the fourth, when Christian Melendez picked up a two RBI single to give a 2-0 edge to La Roche.
Calvin had an immediate response, plating four runs in the top of the fifth, doubling up the Redhawks, 4-2.
La Roche got the offense going again in the bottom of the sixth, scoring six runs to build an 8-4 lead.
Brandon Snyder and Melendez both drew bases loaded walks to tie the game at 4-4, followed by a sacrifice bunt RBI by Ricky Heyz to push the Redhawks back ahead.
Tanner Schmitt ended the scoring in the inning, clearing the bases on a three RBI double to add some insurance.
Unfortunately, La Roche was unable to hold on, allowing six runs in the top of the seventh and the Knights would hold on in the bottom of the seventh to end the game.
Jimmy Roe took the mound and across six innings, allowed four runs, nine hits, one walk and struck out three.
Nathan Kidwell, Samuel DiCicco and Eiramzared Rivera combined to throw the seventh inning, allowing six runs (three earned), five hits, two walks and Rivera picked up the lone strikeout. The loss was registered to DiCicco.
Offensively, La Roche ended game one with six hits, as Damon Foster and Josh Dreyer each had two.
Game Two: Calvin 12 La Roche 1
Unfortunately, Calvin's momentum of the seventh inning of game one rolled over into game two, scoring two runs right away in the bottom of the first.
The Knights added single runs in the third and fifth innings to build a 4-0 lead going into the sixth.
The Redhawks lone run came in the top of the sixth, when Larry Bielawski belted a solo home run to make it 4-1.
Calvin made the game unreachable in the bottom of the sixth, plating eight in the frame to ensure the victory.
Izaak Ogrodowczyk got the start and in 5.1 innings, allowed eight runs, nine hits and walked five.
Rylan Johnson tossed 0.1 inning, allowing three runs (one earned), two hits and walked two, while Dom Brncic threw the final 0.1 inning and allowed one unearned run, one walk and struck out a batter.
Offensively, Dreyer, Bielawski, Dimitri Gary and Danny McCaffrey combined for the four hits in the games.
The Redhawks conclude its time in Floriday, tomorrow, Mar. 14, as they square off against Southern Maine at 10 a.m.
