Panthers' 2nd Half Comeback Falls Short

Panthers' 2nd Half Comeback Falls Short

Bradford, Pa. - The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford men's basketball team whittled a 9 point halftime deficit to take a 2nd half lead but were unable to hang on as they lost to D'Youville 84-78.

Game Notes:

  • Pitt-Bradford got off to a quick start in the contest as Jeffery Fry drilled a three from the right wing on the opening possession of the game to get the Panthers ahead early. After a defensive stop, Daniel Lynch made a pull up jump shot to put the Panthers up 5.
  • Nick Carmichael kept the Panthers afloat trough a 5-minute span that saw the Spartans crawl back into the game, but a high-pressure defense allowed D'Youville to not only erase the early deficit, but also push ahead to build an 8 point lead.
  • Two Gavin Boggs free throws and another three from Fry saw the Panthers trim the lead to 3, but D'Youville responded with a 14-4 run to reinstate the margin. Carmichael ended the run with 5 quick points, and after a D'Youville three, Lynch made two late free throws to send the game to the break with the Panthers trailing 38-29.
  • Pitt-Bradford came out of the locker room with a purpose, as Lynch hit a three on their first possession of the half to open the scoring. Following another nullifying Spartan three, Dylan Meyer made two shots inside and Carmichael got the lead back to three on a putback lay-up.
  • With 14:57 to go, Alex Breindel hit back to back threes to give the Panthers a one-point lead. He hit the first from the top of the key in transition, and the second from the left corner off a pass from Lynch.
  • The Spartans quickly answered with a 12 point run to push their advantage back to 9 points. Miles Parker ended the rally with a three from the wing. After a three from D 'Youville set the deficit at 11, the Panthers went on a 10-2 run to get back within three points. Carmichael made another put-back lay-up and Boggs followed that up with a basket off of an inbounds play. Parker hit a Pull-up jumper from just inside the arc to continue the run and after two spartan free throws, the Panthers added four more through baskets from Meyer and Parker.
  • D'Youville quickly responded yet again, hitting threes on back to back possessions and adding a free throw to restore the 10 point lead.
  • With 1:03 left, a Parker three-point play saw the Panthers cut the lead to 5, but that would be as close as they would come to the Spartans, as D'Youville was able to put the game away from the free-throw line despite late baskets from Parker and Carmichael.
