Women’s Soccer downed in first conference contest at Hilbert

HAMBURG, N.Y. --- Carlow University women's soccer kicked off Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference action with a 5-2 loss at Hilbert College Saturday.

The Hawks (2-4) and the Celtics (0-4-2) scored all of their goals in the first half.

Hilbert struck under two minutes into the match with an unassisted goal from Gabrielle Avallone.

Avallone found Chloe Champagne just five minutes later to put the Hawks ahead, 2-0.

Champagne recorded a hat trick within the span of only five minutes, scoring two more times at 9' and 12' to give Hilbert a 4-0 advantage.

Carlow continued to battle, and the work paid off when Chloe Keller hit a shot at 44'.

The Celtics struck again just 15 seconds later when Meghan McCoy assisted Maddie Lyon on her second collegiate goal to cut Hilbert's lead to 4-2.

The Hawks managed to put one in seconds later to take a 5-2 lead into halftime.

Both teams tallied double-digit shots on goal in the game, but neither would score in the second half.

Lyon put three shots on goal, and seven different Celtics added shots on goal in the game.

The Celtics recorded over twice as many shots in the second half but could not get any of them to fall.

Hilbert out-shot the Celtics, 28-16 (18-10 on goal) and held a 4-1 corner kick advantage.

Rebecca Crawford got the start in net, making four stops in 38 minutes of action. Lyndsey Szekely finished the remainder of the game in goal with nine saves.

Carlow hosts Mount Aloysius College for a 3 p.m. AMCC matchup Sept. 26 at Highmark Stadium.
