Women’s Volleyball picks up second AMCC win in a row over Mount Aloysius

PITTSBURGH --- Carlow University women's volleyball won an electric, 3-1, Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference matchup against Mount Aloysius College Tuesday night in St. Joe's.

The Celtics (10-14, 2-6 AMCC) won the first two sets before the Mounties (10-15, 5-3 AMCC) took the third set. Carlow came up with a 26-24 victory in the fourth set.

Alison Humberston recorded a game-high 20 kills to lead the Celtics, and Taylor Claypoole tallied six of Carlow's 15 blocks on the night.

Claire Yezovich had a game- season-high 23 digs, while Sarah Porter added four aces.

The Celtics tallied 10 service aces to Mount Aloysius' three on the evening.

Carlow put a massive distance between Mount Aloysius to start the game, going on a 17-1 run before the Mounties would regain possession.

A service ace by the Mounties and three Carlow attacking errors in a row allowed Mount Aloysius to claw back, trailing 19-12, but the Celtics ended up with the 25-14 win.

Mount Aloysius tied it up and gained an early 9-7 lead in the second set. A kill from Megan Cooper and back-to-back aces by Porter set off an 8-0 run that gave Carlow a 15-9 lead.

Carlow kept its distance the remainder of the set, and once again Humberston came up with the final blow to put the Celtics up, 2-0, with a 25-20 victory.

The game was far from over, as Mount Aloysius hit .355 to take the third set, 25-15.

The Mounties jumped out to a 12-7 advantage, but Carlow brought it back to trail 14-10. Mount Aloysius kept putting space between them and the Celtics to win the third set and force a fourth.

The teams battled to the very end in the fourth.

Carlow began the set trailing, 7-3, but slowly made its way back to tie the score, 16-all, midway through the game.

Mount Aloysius led, 23-20, and it looked as though a fifth set was imminent with Carlow out of subs.

Head Coach Julie Gaul called a timeout, and Humberston came up with a big kill to get the side out for the Celtics. An attack error cut Mount Aloysius' lead to 23-22, forcing the Mounties to call a timeout of their own.

Both teams traded service errors before an attacking error by the Mounties was followed by a big solo block from Claypoole that gave Carlow a 25-24 advantage in the win-by-two situation.

In the next play, Claypoole and Hess came up with the block to end the set and the match in favor of the Celtics.

Molly Richards recorded a double-double 18 kills and 16 digs for the Mounties, and Emily Henry tallied five of Mount Aloysius' 16 blocks.

Carlow hosts its final home game of the regular season Sat., Nov. 4 against Hilbert College at 3 p.m.
