Men’s Volleyball defeated in AMCC action against Hilbert

PITTSBURGH --- Hilbert College handed Carlow University men's volleyball a 3-0 AMCC loss at St. Joseph Athletic & Fitness Center gym Saturday afternoon.

The Hawks (6-13, 2-3 AMCC) swept the Celtics (3-13, 0-5 AMCC), 25-16, 25-19 and secured a comeback 26-24 victory in the third set. Hilbert hit .407 on the day.

Russ Cyprowski led all players with 17 kills. James Stone and Ryan Callahan combined for 29 assists, and Gavin McLain tallied two of Carlow's four blocks. Logan Alexander led Carlow with eight digs.

Hilbert jumped out to a 7-3 lead to begin the match before back-to-back kills from Will Piccolino and McLain, and a service ace by Callahan cut Hilbert's advantage to one.

The Hawks hit four kills in a row to extend their lead to 11-6 and outscored Carlow 9-5 to gain a 20-11 advantage. Hilbert errors kept Carlow in the game later before the Hawks ended the set with a kill for the 25-16 win.

Hilbert errors and a kill from Cyprowski allowed the Celtics to tie the game several times to start the second set.

Hilbert gained a marginal lead, but Carlow kept it close until midway through the set. A Carlow error set off a 5-0 run to give the Hawks a 17-11 lead, as Hilbert pulled away to secure the 25-19 victory.

The Celtics started with a 4-0 and looked to make a comeback in the third set. A Hilbert service error midway through the set saw the Celtics with an 18-10 advantage.

Carlow led 21-13 and it seemed like the Celtics had the game in the bag, but the Hawks were not deterred.

A kill from Tyler Hassell set of a 6-1 run for Hilbert that cut Carlow's lead to three. Cyprowski landed a kill to put the Celtics ahead 23-19 before a Carlow error and a Hilbert kill and service ace put the Hawks within one.

Following a Carlow timeout, Joshua Lee landed a kill to give Carlow set point, 24-22. The Celtics, however, were no match for Alex Overhoff, who hit four kills in a row to lift Hilbert to a 26-24 comeback victory.

Overhoff led the Hawks with 16 kills and Brad Converse added 10 digs in the win. The Hawks recorded nine service aces on the day.

Carlow returns to action with a 7 p.m. conference match against Geneva College March 27.
