Women’s Basketball extends winning streak to four in AMCC Game of the Week at Penn State Altoona

AMCC GOTW PREVIEW

ALTOONA, Pa. --- Carlow University women's basketball defeated Penn State Altoona, 70-60, in the AMCC Game of the Week Wednesday night.

The Celtics (6-5 overall) and Lions (8-5 overall) are now both 5-2 in conference action so far this season.

Emiley Hillgartner led Carlow with 25 points, picked up a game-high six steals and dished out five assists.

Shaelyn Clark added 15 points and nine boards, while Emma Aubrey sank four of Carlow's six treys on the night to pour in 14 points. Sydney Carr added 12 points, four steals and three assists.

In what looked to be an otherwise evenly matched game, it came down to the team that made fewer mistakes – and that happened to be the Celtics. Carlow scored 21 points off 18 Altoona turnovers and committed just eight of its own turnovers on the night.

The Celtics trailed much of the first quarter but made it out with a 17-14 advantage heading into the second.

Carlow outscored Altoona, 15-11, in the second quarter. The Lions tied the game at 19-all and took a 21-19 lead before two Carlow free throws tied it up again. The teams remained deadlocked at 21 for over two minutes before a three-pointer from Aubrey broke the stalemate to give Carlow the lead midway through the quarter.

The Celtics took a 32-25 advantage into the locker room at halftime.

The Lions outscored Carlow, 21-17, in the third quarter. Although the Celtics led by nine points several times throughout the quarter, Altoona continued to chip away at the deficit until they trailed, 45-44.

A jumper gave the Lions a one-point lead, but Carlow scored two buckets in a row to head into the fourth quarter up, 49-45.

Carlow returned the favor by scoring 21 points in the fourth – including a 14-6 run toward the end of the quarter – to secure the win.

The Lions held a narrow 48-45 margin in rebounds, but the Celtics held an edge at the free throw line where they converted 70 percent (14 for 20).

Avana Sayles led the Lions with 16 points. Raniyah Green added a double-double 10 points and 12 rebounds, while two other Altoona players contributed double figures.

Carlow hosts Alfred State College for a noon game Jan. 13.
