Women’s Volleyball sweeps Penn State Greater Allegheny in home opener

PITTSBURGH --- Carlow University women's volleyball picked up a decisive 3-0 win over Penn State Greater Allegheny inside St. Joseph Athletic & Fitness Center Thursday night.

The Celtics (5-1) started off strong, hitting .452 to win the first set, 25-15.

The Nittany Lions (3-7) led, 9-5, before Carlow went on an 8-1 run to gain the lead.

The Celtics gained momentum to a 23-15 lead, when a Greater Allegheny attack error and an ace from Rebecca Hess ended the set.

Carlow allowed the Nittany Lions just four kills en route to a lopsided 25-12 second set win.

Ahead 12-9, the Celtics went on a 7-1 run to gain a nine-point advantage. Carlow once again ended the set with an ace, this time on a serve from Angel Klein.

Greater Allegheny rallied in the third set, with both teams tying the game several times until the very end.

Trailing 22-21, head coach Julie Gaul called a timeout to allow Carlow to regroup. Immediately out of the break, Megan Cooper came up with a huge kill to tie the game, and a Greater Allegheny attacking error put Carlow ahead, 23-22.

Two big back-to-back kills from Alison Humberston and Javonna Perkins ended the set and the match, 25-22, in favor of the Celtics.

Humberston and Hess led the Celtics with 11 kills apiece, followed by Perkins with 10. Perkins hit .400 on the night while Meghan Alexander racked up 36 assists and Hess added 11 digs. Taylor Claypoole put up two solo blocks on the night.

The Celtics travel to Waynesburg University for an 11 a.m. match Sept. 16.
