Softball wins first two games of Gene Cusic Classic

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The softball team traveled down to Florida for spring break to compete in the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic. The Panthers defeated St. Joseph's (Brkln) and Pitt.-Bradford on day one.

Greenville dominated St. Joseph's in the first game, winning 13-2 in five innings.

GU strung together nineteen hits, led by freshman, Emma Williams. Williams went 3-for-3 with three RBIs.

Valerie Greenley also had an impressive day at the plate. She had two hits, one of which was a double, and three RBIs.

Sydnee Garrett was on the rubber again for the Panthers. Garrett threw a complete game, only allowing four hits and two runs. She faced twenty-two batters and had three strikeouts and two walks. 

In game two, the Panthers triumphed over Pitt.-Bradford for a 5-2 win. Greenville got a jump on Pitt.-Bradford early in the game after scoring two runs in the bottom of the first. They tacked on some insurance runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings to secure the win.

Destiny Dunlap and Garrett led the team in RBIs in the second game. They had one RBI each.

Natalee Moore showed up offensively with a 2-for-4 and two-run performance. 

Sarah Salas started in the circle for the Panthers. She pitched 4.1 innings and allowed both runs but was awarded her second win of the season. Melissa Bernal came in for relief in the fifth inning to record the save. She only allowed one hit and struck out three batters. 

Greenville plays Saint Joseph (Conn.) and Crown (Minn.) in Naples, Fla. on Thursday at 8:00 and 10:00 am CST.
