Pioneers Secure Win Over Eureka, Drop to St. Joseph's

NAPLES, FL - The Alfred State Softball team continued play in the Gene Cussic Collegiate Classic today, splitting in a double header. The 8-4 loss to St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) was followed by an exciting 8-5 win over Eureka College.

In Game 1:

Alfred State dropped the morning game 8-4 vs St. Joseph's. The Pioneers started the scoring for both teams off a McKinlee Harris RBI single that plated Breena Komarnisky. As the next hitter up, Olivia Kratts then singled to center field for a Abigail Marinelli RBI to take the lead 2-0 in the top of the second inning. However, the Bears took advantage of some costly errors made to score five runs and take the lead. Both teams went on to score one run each in the fourth, with Kratts grabbing her second RBI from an Adriana Duval run. Caley Larsen took one for the team as she was hit by a pitch in the sixth inning for a Kratts RBI, but it was not enough to overcome the early deficit.

In Game 2:

Alfred State came out with a vengeance in game 2 and never looked back. The Pioneers stacked 6 runs to start the game, with RBI singles from Lauryn Engle and Olivia Kratts while Audrey Farrell, Abigail Marinelli, and Adriana Duval all had an RBI from the Red Devils' errors. Eureka did not open scoring until the third inning, but were fighting hard to overcome the deficit by putting up a run in every inning up until the seventh. Being up 7-5 now starting the seventh inning, Marinelli carried the Pioneers to victory off an incredible triple that would, two hitters later, allow Madigan Harris to ground out to the short stop, but assist Marinelli to score the final dagger. Alfred State's defense would be the prevailing heroics, as they grabbed three outs in-a-row to secure the victory. Marinelli had three runs on the day while Adriana Duval showed immense composure on the mound for the Pioneers, only allowing five runs.
