Foul shots proved pivotal in Women’s Basketball win over Alfred State

PITTSBURGH --- Carlow University women's basketball defeated Alfred State College 62-52 in AMCC action at Donahue Pavilion Saturday afternoon.

Emari Stinnette led the Celtics (7-5, 6-2 AMCC) with a game-high 16 points and Shaelyn Clark went 9 for 10 from the foul line to add 14 points, four assists and two steals. Sydney Carr contributed a double-double 12 points, 11 boards, five assists, three blocks and a steal, and Jada Bass pulled down nine rebounds.

Alfred State (3-12, 2-6 AMCC) jumped out to a 10-3 advantage to start the game, leading Carlow 13-8 at the end of the first quarter.

A three-pointer from Stinnette gave Carlow its second lead of the game midway through the second quarter. The Pioneers tied the game 23-all with a minute and a half remaining in the quarter, but the Celtics held on for a one-point lead heading into halftime.

Carlow scored six unanswered points to begin the third quarter. The Celtics held Alfred State scoreless for over five minutes to gain an 11-point advantage, outscoring the Pioneers 17-9 in the quarter to lead 42-33 heading into the fourth.

Alfred State cut Carlow's lead to six points toward the end of the fourth quarter, but that was as close as the Celtics would allow, scoring their final six points of the game at the foul line.

Alfred State shot marginally better from the charity stripe, but Carlow scored 17 points off free throws alone. Carlow scored 15 points off fast breaks compared to two for the Pioneers. The Pioneers outrebounded the Celtics 55-52 and outscored Carlow 17-8 off the bench.

Jaiden Williams led Alfred State with 13 points and two other Alfred State players recorded double figures in the effort.

Carlow makes a quick jaunt up the highway to face La Roche University for a 7 p.m. game Wednesday.
