Panthers Unable to Maintain Strong Start, Fall to Penn State-Altoona

Altoona, Pa. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford women's basketball team took an early lead on the road at Penn State-Altoona but were unable to hold onto it as they fell to the Lions 70-54.

  • The Panthers jumped ahead early as Ashley Hall and Alexa Ackerman hit threes on back-to-back possessions to give the Panthers a 6-0 advantage two minutes into the contest. They pushed their lead to eight points three minutes later when Summer Anderson made a putback layup and Avery Benzel stole the ball and rushed downcourt for a layup on the break. The hosts were able to close the gap to 3 points with under a minute to go, but Emily Bethel hit a mid-range jumper to send the game to the 2nd with the Panthers leading 18-13.
  • Benzel was able to start the second with a layup in transition, but after the basket, the Panthers went on a 5-minute scoring drought that saw the Lions erase the advantage. Cailey Barnett hit two jump shots to keep the Panthers within a possession, but Penn State-Altoona was able to score 5 points in the final 30 seconds of the half to take a 7-point lead into the break.
  • Pitt-Bradford's offensive struggles continued after the break, as the Lions scored the first 10 points of the half, keeping the Panthers off the board for the first 5 minutes of the third. The Panthers were able to battle back for the remainder of the third, as they slowly whittled the deficit back down to single digits. Barnett made two more pull-up jumpers and Alexa Ackerman scored 5 points in the Panther rally.
  • In the 4th, Barnett scored 5 points in the first two minutes to put the Panthers down 8, but the hosts were able to respond, outscoring Pitt-Bradford 10-2 over the following four minutes to break the game open. Ashley Hall made two late threes for the Panthers, but it was not enough to close the gap.
