Panthers Move to 2-0 on Season with 73-63 Win

The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford Women's basketball team won their second straight game to start their season on Thursday night, defeating Penn State-Dubois 73-63.

  • The contest got off to a slow start as both teams committed turnovers in the opening seconds. Neither team was able to score until Hannah Lary got things started with a three from the wing.
  • With five minutes to go in the first, the Panthers went on a huge 15 to 2 run that propelled them to an early advantage. They were able to get into quick transition situations and second-chance opportunities as 14 of the points came from close range.
  • Things slowed down for both teams in the second period, as they combined for just 6 points, 4 for the Panthers and 2 for the Lions in the first 5 minutes of the quarter. The Panthers only scored 9 points in the quarter, with the final two buckets coming on layups in the final 30-seconds of the half.
  • The Panther offense continued their slide after the break, and the Lions took advantage, quickly cutting the lead to just 3 points after 4 minutes played in the 2nd half. After a timeout cooled down the Lions, Cailey Barnett hit a three from the top of the key to reignite the Panther offense. The Panthers finished the quarter on a 13-6 run that saw the Lions convert only one field goal, a layup with 13 seconds left in the quarter. The highlight of the period came with 3:45 to go. Cassidy King pulled down a defensive rebound and quickly found Hannah Lary streaking away on the break. She hit Lary on a long outlet pass and Lary completed a three-point play to extend the Panther lead to 10.
  • The Panthers were able to continue building momentum in the 4th, eventually pushing their advantage to a game-high 15 points on a Daizjah Brown three. With 2:40 to go Penn State-DuBois hit a long three to get their deficit back to 10 points, but Lary hit a three and made a late layup to secure the Panther win.

Hannah Lary once again led the Panthers with 17 points. She almost recorded a triple-double in the game, as she also grabbed 9 rebounds and dished out 9 assists. Cassidy King recorded her first career double-double. She scored 12 points on 6-12 shooting and grabbed 16 rebounds. Cailey Barnett was the only other Panther to reach double figures as she finished with 10 points.

The Panthers are now 2-0 on the season. They will host Juniata on Saturday, November 13th with tip-off set for 2:00 p.m.
