Compson's Last Minute Goal Gives Panthers First Win of the Year

Bradford, Pa. -- Scott Compson scored with just 24 seconds left in regulation to give the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford their first win of the season, a 1-0 victory over Thiel.

Compson's goal came after nearly ninety minutes of back and forth play that saw both teams come close to scoring, but ultimately being unable to take the lead. The first chance of the game went to the Panthers. In the 14th minute, Morounfoluwa Olorunyomi hit a long pass from the backline of defense, which found Jan Winnewisser behind the defense. Winnewisser was able to control the pass and dribble towards goal. His shot from just inside the 18 was parried by Thiel's keeper's lower half, rebounding off the crossbar and out of play for a corner.

The Panthers had another chance in the 38th. Following a foul near the center circle, Rider was able to get his head on a long ball to the back post from Olorunyomi. Rider connected on the header but was just wide, as his shot hit the side netting for a goal kick.

The Tomcats had the next best chance to score. In the 73rd minute, they were able to collect a long ball off a free kick and move behind the Panther defense. On a shot from just inside the 18, Pitt-Bradford goalkeeper Sihle Sizani made an acrobatic save to the top right corner, deflecting the ball away for a corner kick.

The biggest play of the game came in its final minute. After the tomcats cut down a counter-attacking effort by the Panthers at midfield, Johnathan Komidar was able to slide into a 50-50 ball and clip a pass to Compson. Compson carried the ball for 35 yards and slipped a pass to Rider on the left-wing. Rider was able to draw two defenders and get a shot off, which the Thiel goalkeeper was able to save, but allowed a rebound in front of the net. Compson, who had continued his run after the pass was the first to the ball, fired the ball into the open net from close range to win the game.

Compson's goal was his third of the season, tying Rider for the team lead. Rider was credited with an assist on the play, his second of the season. Sizani made 5 saves to record the shutout. It was the 6th of his career.

The win moves the Panthers to 1-2-1 on the season. After a grueling stretch that saw the team play 3 times in 4 days, the Panthers will have a few well-deserved days off. Their next game is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 11. They travel to Nazareth for a game that will begin at 12:00 p.m.
