Panthers Beat Franciscan for First Victory of the Season

Bradford, Pa. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford women's basketball team picked up their first win of the year with a 63-47 victory over Franciscan on Saturday. The Panthers put in their best defensive performance of the season, forcing the Barons into 25 turnovers.

Game Notes:

  • The first quarter of the game was action packed as the teams exchanged the lead 8 different times.
  • Down 5 with 3 minutes to go, the Panthers finished th quarter on a 8-2 run. Shirleah Ragin started the run with a three pointer from the wing. Jasmin Miller added a jump shot and Taylor Sutryk stole the ball with 20 seconds to go and made a fast break budget to finish the run.
  • Pitt-Bradford's defense dominated the second quarter, allowing the Barons to score only 3 points. The defense held Franciscan to 1-12 from the field, including 1-7 from three. They also forced 8 turn overs. 
  • The Panthers were only able to muster 9 points of their own, taking a 7 point lead into halftime.
  • The Barons came out of the locker room with a comeback on their mind, scoring 11 of the first 13 points of the half to take a one point lead. 
  • Another Ragin three game the Panthers a 5 point lead with 3:30 to go in the quarter, only to see the Barons score 4 straight to finish the quarter down 1.
  • Pitt-Bradford Dominated the final period, outscoring Franciscan 22-7, including a 22-3 run over the final 8 minutes of action. 
  • At the 6:27 mark, Taylor Sutryk made the second of back to back buckets to give the Panthers the lead for good. 

Leaders:

  • Two Panther Seniors led the way as Jenna Hicks and Shirleah Ragin finished with 14 points a piece.
  • Hicks scored her 14 on 5-9 shooting including 4-4 from the line. She also grabbed 6 rebounds.
  • Ragin's 14 came off the bench on 6-13 shooting. She filled the stat sheet, grabbing 6 rebounds while also recording an assist, steal and 2 blocks.
  • Jasmin Miller was a finished with 12 points as the third Panther to finish in double digits.

 

The Panthers are now 1-7 on the season with a 1-3 record in AMCC play. They will look to build off the momentum from their first win on Monday, as they host Medaille at 8:00 p.m.
