Panthers Late Rally Comes up Short, Fall to Medaille

Buffalo, N.Y. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford Women's Basketball team cut an 8 point lead down to 2 points in the final 30 seconds of their game at Medaille on Wednesday evening, but fell short as they lost the contest 64-60 in Buffalo.

  • The Panthers were able to jump out to an early lead, as they were able to keep the Mavericks off the board for the first 3:51 of play. In that span, they were able to hit two field goals, a Cailey Barnett midrange jumper, and a Cassidy King jump shot. After the hosts were able to tie the game at 5 with 3:42 remaining in the first quarter, the Panthers locked down on defense once again, which allowed them to score 8 straight points. Avery Benzel put the Panthers in front with back-to-back three-pointers and Alexa Ackerman was able to get in the lane and make a layup to close the run. Barnett made another late three for the Panthers and Hannah Lary closed the quarter with a putback layup before the buzzer.
  • As the second quarter began, it was the Panthers who would struggle to get back into rhythm offensively. They were kept off the board for the first 3:48 of the quarter, allowing Medaille to tie the game at 18. King was able to make a layup inside to slow the rally, but the Mavericks were able to continue their run and build a three-point lead. The Panthers were able to retake the lead with 2:28 left in the half, as Ashley Hall made a three from the wing. The Mavericks were able to retake the lead in the final minutes of the half. With time dwindling down in the quarter, Hall added a second long ball to send the game to the break with the Panthers trailing 33-32.
  • Despite two early Medaille baskets to begin the half, the Panthers were able to jump back in front after 2 minutes. Hannah Lary made consecutive threes from the wing to put the Panthers ahead 38-37. The Mavericks were able to retake the lead shortly after losing it, and were able to build another 4-point advantage with under 2 minutes to play in the third. After a Daizjah Brown free throw, the Panthers were able to get a defensive stop and quickly tie the game at 46 on another three from Hall. Unfortunately for Pitt-Bradford, Medaille was able to respond and add a second unanswered basket in the final minute to send the game to its final quarter with the Panthers trailing 50-46.
  • The Mavericks used their momentum from the final minute of the third to add to their lead in the fourth. They held the Panthers off the board for the first 3:37 of play to extend their lead to 9 points. Barnett ended the Panthers' scoreless streak with a putback layup. The hosts were able to maintain their advantage for the remainder of the game as they kept it between four and 10 points. In the final thirty seconds of play, The Panthers took advantage of four missed free throws late in the game to put the contest back to a one-possession game. Hannah Lary pulled up for the first and Cailey Barnett stepped back off of an inbound pass to cut the lead to just 2 points with 12 seconds left. On the resulting play, the Mavericks were able to break the Panther press and make a late layup to finish the game.

The Panthers had their most balanced scoring output of the season, as four different players finished in double figures. Cailey Barnett led the way with 16 points. She also grabbed 7 rebounds, including 5 on the offensive end. Hannah Lary was just behind her with 15 points. She also had 9 rebounds and 5 assists. Ashley Hall and Avery Benzel scored 10 points apiece as Hall also finished with 6 steals and 9 rebounds.
