Panthers Unable to Take Advantage of Second Chances, Fall to Mount Aloysius

Cresson, Pa. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford women's basketball team widely outrebounded their hosts, Mount Aloysius, on Saturday afternoon, but were unable to take advantage of their second chance opportunities, ultimately falling to the Mounties by a score of 59-48.

Game Notes:

  • Both teams got off to a sluggish offensive start, as they scored only 2 points, a Mount Aloysius jumper, over the opening 4 minutes of play.
  • After a second jump shot doubled the Mountie advantage, the Panthers scored 12 straight points to jump ahead of their hosts. Jasmin Miller started the rally with a putback layup. The Panthers were able to get a defensive stop after the layup and Shirleah Ragin gave the Panthers the lead with a three-pointer. Ragin and Taylor Sutryk added to the lead with mid-range jump shots 45 seconds apart, and La'Shyra Williams closed the run with a free throw and a layup following an offensive rebound from Jenna Hicks.
  • The Mounties quickly made the lead disappear around the 1st intermission, as they hit 3 consecutive threes to go back ahead. They hit one at the buzzer to end the first quarter and two more in a two possession span to go ahead by 1.
  • Pitt-Bradford quickly responded as Miller and Cassidy King both made jump shots on back to back possessions to restore a three-point lead.
  • Mount Aloysius responded with a 9-0 run of their own that ended with a Shaelyn Snipes jumper. The Panthers were only able to add 2 Ragin free throws in the final 2:39 of the half, as the Mounties took a 26-20 lead into halftime.
  • Mount Aloysius started the second half off with a 3, but the Panthers responded, scoring 8 straight to get back into the game. Shaelyn Snipes started the rally after getting an offensive rebound and Sutryk was able to pick up a steal and a basket to add to the rally. Sutryk added 2 free throws later in the period and Ashley Hall hit a jumper on a feed from Ragin to cut the deficit to 1 point.
  • Pitt-Bradford went cold after the Hall bucket. They were outscored 10-4 over the final 5 minutes of the third, allowing the Mounties to rebuild the 7 point lead.
  • Snipes opened the final quarter with a three to put the Panthers down 4. The Mounties slowly pushed their lead back to 8, hitting 10 straight from the charity stripe, but Pitt-Bradford threw in one final comeback attempt with just over 4 minutes to go.
  • Jenna Hicks cut into the lead with a layup on a pass from Wiliams, and Ragin hit a three to put the Panthers down only 3 points with 3:05 remaining.
  • The Mounties were able to end the rally with a jumper after a timeout and then outlasted the Panthers over the final three minutes, hitting 8 of 8 from the free-throw line to close the game.

Leaders:

  • Shirleah Ragin led the Panthers with 12 points. Shaelyn Snipes also finished in double figures with 10.
