Panthers unable to Keep Up with Bethany, Fall 5-2

Triadelphia, W.V. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford Men's Soccer team played its second game in as many days on Sunday and was unable to stay with their hosts, Bethany, losing the contest 5-2.

The hosts got off to a quick start against the Panthers as they were able to open the scoring after only 4 minutes. The Bison took advantage of a collision in the box between Pitt-Bradford's goalkeeper, Jared Scarlett, and one of his defenders. After the collision, the Panthers were unable to clear the ball as the Bison fired a one-time shot into the goal to go ahead 1-0.

As they did yesterday, the Panthers were able to recover and even the game at one. In the 17th minute, Jan Winnewisser played a long pass down the left flank. Chase Rider was able to outrun the defender to collect the pass and lifted the ball over the Bethany goalkeeper. With the Bethany defense rushing back to clear the ball, Rider continued after it and used a sliding shot to put it in the net.

The Panthers held off the Bison for nearly 15 minutes but were unable to keep them off the board. The hosts poked home another loose ball in the box for a second goal and added to their advantage two minutes later on a breakaway. Just before the half, Bethany was able to add a third goal.

After the break, the Panthers were able to cut into the lead. In the 58th minute, Rider sprinted down the wing again to collect a high pass from the backline. After expertly controlling the pass, Rider played a low cross into the box where Scott Compson was waiting. Compson coolly took a one-time shot to score and cut the lead to two goals.

With the Panthers pressing to cut further into the advantage, Bethany was able to strike back on the counter to score a 5th goal and put the game away.

Rider's goal was his third of the season. In his two games played, Rider has scored 3 and assisted on 1 of the 5 Panther goals. He also led the team in shots, taking 4 and putting one on target. Scott Compson's 2nd half goal was his second of the year. In his collegiate debut, Jared Scarlett made 11 saves.

The Panthers (0-2-1) will look to respond to their back-to-back road losses by getting into the win column while back in Bradford. They will host Theil College on Tuesday evening. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. at the Kessel Athletic Complex.
