Panthers Struggle After Holiday Break, Fall to Penn State-Harrisburg

Harrisburg, Pa. -- After having the Thanksgiving holiday off, the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford women's basketball team returned to action on Saturday evening, playing in the Pride - Spirit - Honor Tournament, hosted by Penn State-Harrisburg. The Panthers opened the tournament against the hosts, losing 91-40 to the Lions.

  • The Panthers got off to a quick start as Ashley Hall was able to hit a jumper on the opening possession to put the Panthers ahead, but the Lions quickly responded after just 8 seconds, starting a 10-0 run that put them up 10-2 after just over two minutes. Hannah Lary was able to end the run with a putback layup but saw Penn State-Harrisburg quickly regain momentum. The hosts shut down the Panthers, allowing them to score only 1-point over the final 7:36 of the quarter, as they scored 17  to send the game to the second quarter with the Panthers trailing 27-5.
  • The Lions continued to push their advantage in the second quarter, outscoring Pitt-Bradford 24-11 in the period. Daizjah Brown was able to hit two jumpers to lead the Panthers with 4 points in the quarter. 
  • Cassidy King got the second half started for the Panthers with a layup inside, only to see it quickly answered with a Harrisburg three. Pitt-Bradford was able to go on a 7-3 run late in the quarter. Lary started the run with a jump shot and then Cailey Barnett answered a Lions three with a layup inside. Avery Benzel finished the run, hitting a three on a pass from Lary with 1:45 to go in the third.
  • The Panthers continued to struggle offensively in the final quarter, as they were only able to connect on three field-goal attempts. King, Barnett, and Alannah Allen all made baskets for the Panthers in the fourth, while Brown, Lary, and Alexa Ackerman added free throws.

Hannah Lary was the Panthers' leading score, finishing with 7 points. Cassidy King scored 5 points but was able to grab 12 rebounds, including 6 on the offensive end. Avery Benzel totaled 3 steals in the game, while Daizjah Brown led with 3 assists.

Pitt-Bradford drops to 2-4 with the loss. They will be right back in action tomorrow, as they will play in the consolation game of the Pride - Spirit - Honor tournament. They will take on Widener at 1:00 p.m.
