Panthers Fall in Season Opener at #20 Randolph Macon

Ashland, Va. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford baseball team kicked off its season with a 7-3 loss at #20 Randolph Macon on Friday afternoon.

Game Notes:

  • The Hornets got on the board early, putting Ryan Boyer in an early jam. Boyer walked the leadoff hitter and allowed a single through the right side to the next batter. He was able to get a strikeout and a fly ball to right to put runners on the corners with 2 down. Boyer almost got out of the jam, getting the Randolph Macon batter to pop up in the infield, but a harsh wind forced the ball away from the Panther third baseman for an infield single. One run scored on the pop -up and a second advanced after the batter got caught in a run down.
  • Randolph Macon tacked on a third run in the 3rd inning. After recording two outs on two pitches, Boyer allowed a single up the middle. After a stolen base, the Hornets singled in the third run on a liner to right.
  • The hosts put on another two-out rally in the 4th. The Hornets strung together four consecutive hits with two down to bring in two runs.
  • The Panthers were able to strike back and put up 2 runs of their own in the 5th. Kevin Rehak was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and Samuel Dreistdadt followed it with a single to center. Following a sacrifice bunt from Josh Zelinski, Sawyer Packard brought in a run while reaching on an error at 2nd base, and Tyler Hoops brought in the second with a grounder to third.
  • Alex Andrzejewski entered the game in the 5th and retired 6 straight batters.
  • In the 7th, the bottom of the Pitt-Bradford line-up produced again, tacking on a third run. Dreistadt beat out an infield single, and Zelinski moved him into scoring position with a ground-rule double to right field. Packard brought in his second run of the day, with an RBI groundout to 1st.
