Panthers Open AMCC Play with Road Win

Pittsburgh, Pa. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford men's soccer team opened its AMCC schedule on the road Saturday afternoon, defeating LaRoche 2-0.

The Panthers controlled the majority of possession in the game, as they tallied a season-high with 22 shots, 18 of them on target.

Pitt-Bradford started on the front foot, as they registered the first two shots of the game. Lysandre Chaabi and Spencer Sklar both forced saves from the LaRoche keeper before Jared Scarlett made two in a row for the Panthers. Scarlett came up with 5 saves in the opening half and was rewarded as Pitt-Bradford took the lead with 2-minutes left in the half. After a long throw-in was cleared back to the left flank, defender Will Smith unleashed a curled one-time shot that found the side netting on the far post. The strike from outside the box was the first of the freshman defender's collegiate career and sent the game to the break with Pitt-Bradford up 1-0.

The Panthers continued their push as the second half began, as they were able to double their advantage after five minutes. In the 51st, Chaabi was able to control a ball that was cleared to the right wing off of a free kick. Using just two touches, Chaabi sent a cross back into the penalty area where Scott Compson was able to beat the onrushing goalkeeper to the ball and head a shot into the open net. The hosts tried to respond immediately, but Scarlett made two quick saves to keep the lead at two. The Panthers were able to maintain the majority of possession for the rest of the game, as they forced 13 2nd half saves out of the Redhawk netminder. LaRoche was able to break out occasionally, but Scarlett made 8 more second-half stops to preserve the shutout.

Will Smith was credited with the game-winning goal on his first career strike. He was also able to put one more shot on target while marshaling the defensive effort at center back. Scott Compson scored his 2nd of the season while totaling 4 shots, with 3 on goal. Lysandre Chaabi picked up his second assist on the Compson goal and also had 3 shots, all on target. Spencer Sklar led the team with 5 shots on goal, while Austin Hogan added 3 more. Jared Scarlett picked up his second win of the year and his first career shutout. He made 13 saves in the game.

The victory moves the Panthers to 2-7 on the season, but 1-0 in AMCC Play. They will be back on the road on Tuesday as they travel to Houghton for a non-conference matchup beginning at 7:00 p.m.
