Gawlak on Fire in Hilbert's Consolation Game Victory

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The Hilbert College women's basketball team rebounded from their opening game loss yesterday by dominating the Consolation Game of the Woodcliff Hotel and Spa tournament hosted by St. John Fisher College this afternoon.

The Hawks built a 38-17 half time lead and never looked back en route to the 69-39 victory over Anna Maria College (MA).

Emily Gawlak led the Hilbert charge by swiping six steals, hitting 8-of-12 from the floor (many in transition) and dishing four assists in 28 minutes of action.

"We played a tough opening game against a strong St. John Fisher team yesterday," said coach Amy Senefelder.  "We struggled early with match ups but finished the game strong which carried over into today's consolation game.  We had a great start to the game and had a lot of energy.  We can contribute that to yesterday's learning experience."

Today, Hilbert hustled to a 21-4 opening quarter lead against Anna Maria and they never looked back.

The Hawks stretched their lead by intermission with a 17-13 second-quarter spurt and extended it even further, outscoring the Cats 24-13 in the third quarter.

"Every Hawk saw minutes in the opening half and gained valuable playing experience today as we prepare for the long Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference schedule," continued Senefelder.

Taylor Corts tossed in 14 points, hitting 50% of her shots from the floor.  She added six rebounds and two assists.

Ashley Repine (9 points/8 rebounds) and Katelyn Proy (8 points/5 rebounds (4 OR)) played just a little over 20 minutes giving valuable playing time to rookies on the bench.  Also, Demi Battin was credited with five steals and nine points running the show for 25 minutes.

Every Hilbert player filled the stat sheet this afternoon, with the Hawks working for a 40-31 advantage on the boards, jumping for 18 offensive opportunities; Hilbert held a 20-4 advantage in second chance points, scored 36 points off turnovers and 32 points in the paint today.

Hilbert (3-2) will hit the road midweek and play at  Oswego November 20th.  They have a few days off for the Thanksgiving holiday but return to action on Saturday, November 24 with their first double header with the Hilbert men's team at Alfred State.
