Panthers Fall to Bengals on First Road Trip

Buffalo, N.Y. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford women's basketball team made its first road trip of the season on Wednesday, falling to Buffalo State 85-48.

  • The Panthers got off to a strong start in the game as they were able to jump out to an early 4-1 lead. Cailey Barnett started the scoring for the Panthers on their first possession, making a putback layup after an Avery Benzel missed three. The Panthers got three quick defensive stops and Hannah Lary stole the ball and converted a layup. The Panther lead did not last long, as the Bengals quickly responded with a three to tie the game. they scored 10 straight points after the Lary layup to go ahead 11-4.
  • Pitt-Bradford was able to battle back through the middle portion of the quarter. Daizjah Brown broke the scoreless streak for the Panthers with two free throws and Lary made another layup inside to cut the lead back to just three. Buffalo State once again answered, pushing their lead back to 8, but the Panthers made another run in the quarter. Barnett hit two free throws with 1:32 in the quarter and after a defensive stop, Cassidy King hit a three to once again pull the Panthers to within one possession. Unfortunately for Pitt-Bradford, this was as close as they would get to the hosts, as the Bengals finished the quarter with 8 straight points in the final minute to end the period with a 26-15 lead.
  • In the 2nd, the Bengals continued to add to the advantage, scoring the first four points of the quarter. Ashley Hall made a jumper and a three on the following possession to get the lead back to 10 points, but Buffalo State went on a 13-3 run over the next four minutes to extend their lead to 20 points.
  • After being down 47-30 at the break, the Panthers struggled to contain the Bengals offense as they put up 28 points in the third quarter. Pitt-Bradford was able to end the period on a good note. Alexa Ackerman made a jump shot with 48 seconds in the quarter and then blocked a shot on the next Buffalo State possession. After a late Bengal turnover, Cailey Barnett made a layup at the buzzer to send the game to the final quarter with the hosts leading 75-42.
  • Both teams struggled to score in the final period of play, as they combined for just 16 points. 

Cailey Barnett led the Panthers as she recorded her first career double-double. She scored 14 points and grabbed 18 rebounds, including 11 on the offensive end. Daizjah Brown scored 8 points in the loss, while Hannah Lary and Ashley Hall each added 7.

The Panthers fall to 2-2 on the season with the loss. They will return to KOA Arena on Friday when they host Fredonia. The game is scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m.
