Panthers Split Doubleheader at Bethany, Boyer Strikes Out 15 in 2-Hit Shutout

Bethany, W.V. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford baseball team split its doubleheader at Bethany on Sunday Afternoon. The Panthers took the first game 5-0 on the strength of a Ryan Boyer 2-hit shutout. They fell 2-1 in a pitcher's duel in the nightcap.

Game 1 Notes:

  • Boyer dominated the competition throughout the game. He struck out 7 of the first 8 batters he faced. The Bisons were able to get back to back singles in the 3rd, but boyer got a fielders choice and a strikeout to get out o the inning. He retired the final 14 batters, striking out a total of 15 in the game. 
  • Offensively, the Panthers gave Boyer a lead right away. They were able to load the bases on a leadoff walk and 2 hit batsmen. Samuel Dreistadt brought in the first run by beating out a potential double-play ball with the bases loaded and Kevin Rehak brought in the second with a bloop single to right.
  • Pitt-Bradford added the 3rd run in the top of the 3rd. After Matt Hair led off with a single, Dreistadt walked to put the first two batters on. The run scored two batters later when Tyler Aires reached on an error.
  • The final two runs for the Panthers were scored in the 5th. Dreistadt hit a one-out single through the right side and then scored on a 2-out Aires double off the wall in left. Aires came around to score a batter later when Joshua Zelinski singled to center.

Leaders:

  • Ryan Boyer picked up his first win of the season with his dominant performance Sunday. His final line read 7-innings pitched with 2 hits, 1 hit batsmen and the 15 strikeouts.
  • Tyler Hoops went 2 for 4 in the game, scored 1 run and stole 2 bases.
  • Joshua Zelinski also went 2-4 with the 6th inning RBI single.
  • Samuel Dreistadt and Tyler Aires each went 1 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI. Dreistadt added 1 stolen base.

Game 2 Notes:

  • Alex Andrzejewski took the hill for game 2. The Bisons started the game with a lead-off double, but Andrzejewski retired the next three batters to strand the runner. He retired the side in the 2nd to keep the game scoreless.
  • The Panthers struck first in the top of the 3rd. Tyler Hoops reached on an error and then quickly stole second base to get in scoring position. Jake McNabb came through, driving an RBI single to bring in Hoops.
  • Bethany quickly struck back on Andrzejewski in their half of the inning. They led off the inning with a single and then hit a double down the left-field line to tie the game at 1. Matt LaBadie threw out the runner attempting to steal third and Andrzejewski got the next to batters out to end the inning.
  • The Bisons were able to take the lead in the 6th. They chased Andrzejeski with a two-out triple to left, followed by an RBI single. Andrew Bacha entered the game and retired the only batter he faced with one pitch.
  • Jake McNabb was able to get on base with a two-out walk but was unable to move further as Matt Hair grounded out to short to end the game.

Leaders:

  • Alex Andrzejewski took the loss despite his strong outing. He allowed 2 runs on 6 hits while walking none. He struck out 6 Bisons.
  • The Panthers were only able to muster 4 hits in the game. Jake McNabb finished 2 for 3 with an RBI and a walk. Samuel Dreistadt also went 2 for 3 and stole 2 bases.

The split moves the Panther record to 1-3 on the season. They will have six days off before they travel to New Market, Va. to play a three-game series with Wells. They will play a doubleheader on Saturday the 29th, with games starting at 12:00 and 3:00 p.m. They will play the third game on Sunday, with first pitch at 12:00 p.m
