Panthers Fall to Eagles 72-51

Bradford, Pa. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford women's basketball team picked up their first loss of the season on Saturday afternoon as they fell to Juniata 72-51.

  • The Panthers fell behind early as they struggled with the Eagles' length inside and saw the visitors jump out to a 24-5 lead after the first quarter. Daizjah Brown scored all 5 points in the quarter for the Panthers, as she hit two jump shots and a free throw. Her second jump shot came with 6:44 to go in the period to put the Panthers down 7-5, but Pitt-Bradford was held scoreless for the rest of the quarter as Juniata scored 17 straight.
  • Ashley Hall hit a three to kick start the second quarter for the Panthers. Two possessions later, Cassidy King stole the ball and sprinted down court for a lay-up to cut the lead to 16, but the Eagles responded to score 5 in a row of their own to restore the advantage. Juniata extended their lead to as many as 26 before the Panthers were able to score 6 of the final 8 points of the quarter to get to halftime trailing 43-20.
  • The Panthers got back to within 20 points after just 2 and a half minutes. Alexa Ackerman and Cailey Barnett made threes on back-to-back possessions and Ackerman concluded the Panther as she hit a floater in the lane. The Panthers cut the lead to 16 points on a three from Hannah Lary but saw the Eagles respond with a jumper to send the game to its final period with an 18 point Juniata advantage.
  • Midway through the fourth, the Panthers put together a rally to get the lead to 13, its lowest total since the first quarter Avery Benzel hit a three and then after a missed jumper, made a layup. The Panthers got one more stop after the Benzel layup and Lary was able to get inside and make another layup of her own. The momentum did on stay on the Panthers side for long, however, as the Eagles scored 11 straight to push their advantage back over 20 points.

Avery Benzel led the Panthers in scoring as she finished with 13 points off the bench. She was the only double-digit scorer for the Panthers, as Lary and Barnett each finished with 8. Cassidy King scored 5 points, but put in her third straight double-digit rebound performance, grabbing 11 in the contest.

The Panthers fall to 2-1 on the season. They will hit the road for the first time this season as they travel to Buffalo State on Wednesday. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
