UMW Baseball Sweeps Alfred St. on Saturday

The University of Mary Washington baseball team swept a doubleheader from Alfred State College on Saturday at V. Earl Dickinson Stadium. The Eagles took the opener, 7-2, before winning game two with a pair of late runs, 6-5.

After thre scoreless innings in the opener, UMW scored one in the fourth, as Ty Lowe singled and scored on a double from Noah Roots. The Eagles scored five in the fifth, as Ryan SChwarz doubled, stole third, and scored on a wild pitch. Jacob Christenbury and Jonathan Sedmak singled before Bobby Ayscue ripped a two-run triple, and Ayscue scored on a single from Lowe. After a Roots walk, Luke Guerzon added an RBI double.

After Alfred State scored two in the sixth, UMW added one in the sixth, as Andrew Gerhart walked and scored on a single from Sedmak.

Sedmak and Lowe each had two hits, while Roots, Guerzon and Schwarz doubled and Ayscue tripled. Jackson Myers gained the complete game victory, allowing one earned run on five hits in seven innings, with four strikeouts.

In the second game, the Eagles struck first with a run in the first, as Christenbury walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored on a single from Ayscue. After Alfred State scored two in the second and two in the third, the Eagles tied the score with three in their half of the third. Ayscue and Lowe provided RBI singles, and Roots added an RBI fielder's choice.

Alfred State scored once in the fifth to take the lead, but UMW tied the score with one in the seventh, as Tim Blankenship homered, and went ahead to say with singles from Roots and Guerzon, and scored the go ahead run on an error.

Ayscue had three hits, while Lowe and Roots each had two. Ryan Northup scored the win, throwing three shutout innings, allowing one hit.

The Eagles will return to action on Tuesday when they host Southern Virginia University at 3:00 p.m.
