Dominating Pitching Performances Highlight Panther Sweep of Wells

New Market, Va. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford baseball team used two 2-hit shutouts from Ryan Boyer and Alex Andrzejewski to sweep a doubleheader with Wells.

Game 1: Pitt-Bradford 9 - Wells 0

Notes:

  • Boyer ran into trouble early, as the Express were able to get the first two batters on base with a single and an error. After a double steal put the runners on 2nd and 3rd, Boyer struck out 3 batters in a row to end the threat. In the second, he struck out 3 batters while allowing a 2-out double, the last hit he would allow in the contest.
  • The Panthers took the lead in the bottom of the 2nd. Joshua Zelinski hit a one-out single to right-center and then moved to third on a Robert Sawicki double to left-center. Kevin Rehak brought in Zelinski with a fielder's choice that saw Sawicki thrown out going to third base.
  • The Panthers tacked on a second run an inning later. Tyler Hoops led off the inning with a triple to the gap in right-center. 3 batters later, Matt Hair brought him in with a clutch 2-out single to left-center.
  • Boyer retired 13 straight batters through the middle of the game to keep Wells in check.
  • With Boyer cruising, the Panthers erupted for 7 runs in the bottom of the 6th to put the game away. Tyler Aires dropped down a bunt for a leadoff single and then moved to third on a Zelinski double down the left-field line. Sawicki brought in Aires with a single through the left side. Wells pitching was able to retire two in a row, but the Panthers scored 6 with a two-out rally.
  • Samuel Dreistadt beat out an infield single to keep the inning going. After a pitching change, Jake McNabb brought in a run when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Matt Hair cleared them with a triple to left-center. Hair was able to score the final run on a Wells error.
  • Following the Panther explosion, Boyer came back out for the 7th and quickly ended the game. He hit the first batter of the inning with a pitch and then got a pop-up and 2 strikeouts to end the game.

Game 2: Pitt-Bradford 10 - Wells 0

Notes:

  • The Panthers got off to a quick start in the nightcap, as they received some help from the Express in the top of the first. Tyler Hoops was hit by a pitch to begin the game and quickly stole second to move into scoring position. He was able to score after 2 quick Panther outs when Joshua Zelinski reached on an error. Zelinski was able to double the advantage a batter later when Samuel Dreistadt also reached on an error.
  • Alex Andrzejewski got the start for the Panthers and quickly got Pitt-Bradford back to the plate. He struck out the first two batters he faced and then retired the side with a grounder to Hoops at short.
  • Pitt-Bradford quickly doubled their lead again with 2 more runs in the 2nd. Tyler Aires singled to start the inning and moved to third on a double from Matt LaBadie. Aires scored on a passed ball and then after a strikeout, LaBadie was driven in on a Kevin Rehak RBI single.
  • Andrzejewski retired Wells on 9 pitches and the Panthers tacked on another run in the 3rd. They used 3 straight singles from Sawicki, Jake McNabb, and Zelinski to score their 5th of the game. Despite having 2 runners on with no outs, the Panthers were unable to add any more in the frame. In the Wells half of the third, Andrzewski got the first two batters but allowed a 2-out double. He quickly erased the runner and ended the threat as he picked off the runner at 2nd after throwing 1 pitch.
  • The 4th inning saw the Panthers string together hits yet again as the first 3 batters were able to reach. Sawyer Packard led off with a single and then moved to second on another Rehak single. Hoops brought Packard around with a third straight single. Robert Sawicki brought in the second of the inning with a sacrifice fly to center field.
  • Pitt-Bradford scored their final 3 runs in the top of the 5th inning. After the first two batters were retired, Packard hit a double and then scored on Rehak's third hit of the game. Rehak stole second and then was chased home on a Hoops triple. Sawicki followed the triple up with an RBI single to bring in Hoops and put the Panthers up 10-0.
