Baseball Loses to #7 Cortland, McNabb Blasts 1st HR of Season

Ashland, Va. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford lost for the second day in a row to a nationally ranked opponent to begin their season 0-2. They fell behind #7 Cortland early, and lost by a final score of 18-3.

Game Notes:

  • The Red Dragons were able to get ahead early, scoring 3 runs in the first inning despite a run-scoring double play turned by the Panthers. They quickly tacked on 7 more runs in the 2nd inning, chasing starting pitcher Logan Edmonds after retiring 5 batters. He allowed 9 earned runs on 5 hits and 5 walks while striking out 1. Ben Mulhall entered and got the final out of the inning after a few wild pitches and a double scored 2 more. Things did not improve for the Panthers in the 3rd, as Cortland scored 3 more on 3 hits, a hit batter, walk, and an error.
  • Pitt-Bradford was able to pull a run back in the 4th, as Jake McNabb drilled a leadoff home run over the left-field wall. The Panthers got two more singles in the inning but were unable to push any more runs across in the frame. Cortland responded immediately, scoring 3 more runs in the bottom half of the inning. Alex Miles entered the game in the middle of the inning and after a single and a sacrifice fly allowed two inherited runners to score, he was able to get the final two outs to end the inning. The Dragons added one run off of Miles in the 5th.
  • Andrew Bacha pitched the final three innings for the Panthers, allowing only 1 run on 4 hits. He struck out 3 batters.
  • The Panthers were able to scrape across two final runs in the 8th. They loaded the bases with a hit batsman and two walks and Samuel Dreistadt came through with a two-out two-run single through the right side of the infield

Leaders:

  • Jake McNabb's solo blast was hit only hit of the day. He finished 1-4.
  • Samuel Dreistadt put in his second two-hit day in as many games. Along with his 2-RBI single in the 8th, he tattooed a 2-out triple to center in the 2nd inning. He is now 4 for 8 on the young season, has scored 2 runs and driven in 2.
  • Kevin Rehak and Tyler Aires picked up the other hits for the Panthers.
  • Andrew Bacha and Alex Miles combined for 5 innings of work out of the bullpen, allowing just 2 runs on 8 hits.

The Panthers are now 0-2 on the season after facing tough, nationally ranked competition to begin their season. They are scheduled to travel to Bethany in West Virginia for their next set of games. They will play in a 7-inning doubleheader against the Bisons on Sunday, February 23rd. Game 1 is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. and the nightcap to start approximately a half-hour after the first.
