Baseball closes out Florida competition with sweep of Penn State Altoona

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Concordia Wisconsin Falcons closed out their Florida competition with a doubleheader sweep of the Penn State Altoona Lions on Sunday.

THE BASICS
- Final Score: Falcons 6, Lions 2 | Falcons 6, Lions 4
- Records: Falcons 3-2, Lions 0-6

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Falcons opened game one with a two-run first inning. Sam Zarling (West Bend, Wis.) tripled to right-center to drive in a run, and Sam Beers (Janesville, Wis.) drove him in with a grounder.
- In the second, Johannes Haakenson (Janesville, Wis.) hit a sac fly to extend the Falcon lead to 3-0.
- Sean Tillmon (Plainfield, Ill.) drove in a pair in the fifth inning with a two-run single up the middle to make it 5-0,
- Beers added another Falcon run with an RBI double in the top of the seventh. The Lions managed two runs in the bottom half of the inning but the rally fell short as CUW took game one 6-2.
- Ryan Green (Green Bay, Wis.) earned the win, striking out seven in six innings of work. Beau Wills (Coal City, Ill.) closed out the game with a scoreless final inning, allowing no hits and striking out one to earn the save.
- Game two, the Falcons allowed a run in the top of the first, though they responded in the bottom half of the inning as Beers hit an RBI single to left to tie the game.
- The Lions retook the lead in the top of the third, but the Falcons answered again in the same inning, this time with three runs. With runners on first and third, Blake Gosswein (Barrington, Ill.) hit an RBI single up the middle to tie the game at 2-2. The next batter, Zarling, singled through the left side to give the Falcons a 3-2 lead. Two batters later, Beers singled to left to make it 4-2.
- Penn State Altoona managed to tie the game with runs in the fourth and sixth innings.
- The Falcons broke the 4-4 tie in the bottom of the sixth with two outs as Dillan Fike (Oak Lawn, Ill.) scored from third on a throwing error. Gosswein followed with an RBI double to right to make it 6-2.
- Wills pitched the final two innings for the Falcons and earned the win. The sophomore allowed no runs and struck out the final two batters as Concordia Wisconsin won their third consecutive game.

UP NEXT
- The Falcons travel to Tuscon, Arizona to face six teams over spring break, starting with a doubleheader against Wesleyan on Saturday, March 14th.
